Rarity - Mount Hood Sunset Alpenglow and Frozen Frog Lake Reflections
Frog Lake, Mount Hood, Oregon
Alpenglow on Mount Hood Faintly Reflecting in Frozen Frog Lake at Dusk, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Long after sunset as dusk sets in, true alpenglow bathes Mount Hood and the skies above with ethereal pastel colors while a thin sheet of ice begins to seal the quiet, cold lake below capturing faint reflections, frozen patterns and trapped methane bubbles beneath its glassy surface.
Mount Hood | Oregon
Alpenglow is among my favorite things in nature. When those soft pastels show up after the sun has set, it's truly a sight to see. This photo was taken at dusk, long after the sun had set. It was one of the most stunning examples of Alpenglow I've ever witnessed. Sunset itself was amazing, but as twilight set in the colors grew more intense. True alpenglow occurs after the sun has set. It happens due to the curve of the earth, as the sun’s rays clear the horizon long past where we can see and reflect off the upper atmosphere. This night was pure magic, as the cloud cover was just right to catch the clouds in addition to lighting up the slopes. Mount Hood reflected faintly in the frozen waters of the lake, as a few frozen methane bubbles can be seen to the left just behind the log. The delicate formations on the newly formed ice were stunning, reminiscent of waves of ice. Alpenglow where the colors last on this long after sunset are rare, but it's something I've been fortunate enough to witness on many occasions. This night, the frozen lake, ice formations and methane bubbles in the frozen ice were the icing on the cake. It's one of those moments in nature where everything comes together in perfect harmony.
