Seeing Double - Mount Hood Sunrise and Foggy Trillium Lake Reflections
Trillium Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Sunrise Reflection over Mount Hood and Foggy Trillium Lake, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Warm yellow, orange and red colors blanket the skies and clouds over Mount Hood and Trillium Lake at sunrise, as the scene casts a perfect reflection in the mirror-like, glassy water while early morning fog rises from Trillium Lake. Snow blankets White River Glacier, Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield) and Zigzag Glacier on Mount Hood as Illumination Rock and Crater Rock rise from its upper slopes.
The rising fog enveloping the water of Trillium Lake mixes with the fog covering the trees in the Mount Hood National Forest and the lower slopes of Mount Hood, creating an ethereal blanket of morning mist as the mountain rises above it all. Clouds sit perfectly in the sky above the summit of Mount Hood as it rises above the perfect V-shaped tree line in the forest on the northern end of Trillium Lake.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures snow covered Mount Hood at sunrise reflecting in Trillium Lake as fog blankets the water. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Ethereal Magic of Mount Hood at Sunrise Reflecting in Trillium Lake
There's something alluring about the magic of sunrise over Mount Hood and Trillium Lake. Cold air overnight, at dawn, and at sunrise moves over the water of Trillium Lake, which retains heat from the previous day, causing evaporation fog to rise from the water. As the sun continues to rise, the air heats up and the fog disappears, but witnessing the fog enveloping Trillium Lake in those early morning hours is always a wondrous sight to behold.
Witnessing sunrise over Mount Hood as it casts a mirror reflection in Trillium Lake is always a wondrous sight, but when the mountain and the colors of sunrise mix with the evaporation fog rising from Trillium Lake, it feels like watching a sunrise in the mountains of heaven. The fog put on a spectacular show as it enveloped the water of the lake and the trees in the Mount Hood National Forest surrounding it, and the colors of sunrise blanketing the skies above while creating a warm reflection in the water of Trillium Lake was truly a stunning sight. It's an ethereal mix of elements that always makes time stand still, as you bask in the perfection of nature in all its glory.
There's something hauntingly beautiful about scenes like this, where Mount Hood rises above the foggy waters of Trillium Lake as sunrise greets a new day. I've spent a lifetime visiting this place. I grew up (and still live) about an hour from here, first visiting with my parents as a child. Mount Hood was one of my first loves growing up, and over 40 years later, I've made a career out of visiting these thin places in nature where the lines between Heaven and Earth get blurred. Mount Hood has always felt like a thin place, and over 4 decades since I first laid eyes on it with my parents my first love still takes my breath away. Mount Hood is far and away my favorite mountain temple, and after a lifetime of visiting it the ethereal magic of sunrise still stirs my soul, especially when the morning blesses us with reflections in the water where we're seeing double as we gaze into the perfect mirror reflection nature bestows upon us.
