Dance with the Alpenglow - Sunset Alpenglow over Mount Hood Reflecting in Frozen Frog Lake

Frog Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow Sunset on Mount Hood Reflecting in Frog Lake Frozen with Methane Bubbles in the Mount Hood National Forest

The colors of sunset hang on long after sunset as civil twilight deepens, igniting true alpenglow on Mount Hood and the skies above Frog Lake with ethereal pastel colors. The lingering light bathes the  forest covering the ridge above in a warm glow, while a thin sheet of ice begins to seal quiet, cold Frog Lake below capturing faint reflections of alpenglow on Mount Hood and in the skies above. Frozen needle ice patterns form jagged shards of ice as trapped methane bubbles beneath Frog Lake's glassy surface show through the thin layer of ice covering the water of the alpine lake.

Alpenglow reflects off the jagged crystal shards of ice, as a magical mix of color and delicate patterns cover the water while the reflections show through the thin layer of textured ice. These delicate ice patterns form when rapid cooling and a soft gentle breeze occur when the thin layer of ice is freezing. This causes the ice crystals to grow outwards in jagged, interlocking geometric patterns.

The methane bubbles in frozen Frog Lake form when decay of organic matter such as fallen leaves, algae and aquatic plants occurs on the muddy bottom of the lake. This microbial decay causes anaerobic decomposition in the oxygen depleted lake bottom, resulting in methane gas which slowly rises to the surface. As autumn transitions to winter and the water begins to freeze, the methane bubbles get trapped in columns in the water as it rapidly begins to freeze over and ice forms. These suspended pockets of methane gas, seen in the lower left of the image, produce wonderful distinct circular patterns in the ice.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures snow covered Mount Hood bathed in alpenglow after sunset as it reflects in the thin layer of ice covering Frog Lake while methane bubbles rise to the surface. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Early Winter Sunset Magic on Mount Hood and Frog Lake

I've always loved that late autumn to early winter transition on Mount Hood. The cold weather brings an array of changes. The position of the sun in the sky at sunset leads to stunning indirect alpenglow on the southern face of the mountain, and the magic light hangs on lighting the snow covered slopes and the skies above in a glorious magenta hue. Once the water on Frog Lake begins to freeze over, it's pure bliss.

Jagged crystals of textured ice shards form delicate patterns due to the rapid cooling and soft breezes which occur this time of year, and when the ice forms a thin coat like this the reflection of Mount Hood and the alpenglow in the sky above often shows through the ice layer. Methane bubbles often form in the ice due to the methane gas from decomposing material at the bottom of the lake, as the methane tries to escape but gets trapped in the rapidly freezing water.

There's something about these cold evenings up on Mount Hood which always captivates my soul. There's a peaceful stillness in the air as the cold air brushes across your face, and these early winter scenes often feel as if I'm looking out at the mountains of Heaven, where snow covered peaks and stunning alpenglow reign supreme. I've always thought of Mount Hood as the Queen of Oregon, and there's nothing quite like watching the mountain dance with the alpenglow as those magic pastel colors cover its slopes with a soft, wondrous blanket of light.
