Infinity Mirror - Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood and Trillium Lake Reflections

Trillium Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood Reflecting in Trillium Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) rises into the night skies above moonlit Mount Hood as it reflects in the still waters of Trillium Lake. The White River Glacier, Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield) and Zigzag Glacier cover Mount Hood in a blanket of snow as Illumination Rock rises from the upper slopes of the mountain.

Trillium Lake was a perfect mirror, creating a mirror reflection of Mount Hood, Comet NEOWISE and the trees of the Mount Hood National Forest in the waters as the comet made its appearance over the mountain in the early morning hours at 3:47am. I've always loved how Mount Hood rises from a perfect v-shape below from this spot, and witnessing the reflection in Trillium Lake has always been among my favorite things. I've spent my entire life visiting Mount Hood and Trillium Lake. I grew up about an hour from here, and over 4 decades later I still love visiting this place. I've seen a lot of beautiful things at Trillium Lake over the years, but the experience of witnessing Comet NEOWISE reflecting with Mount Hood in its perfectly still waters is something I'll never forget.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE rising above Mount Hood until moonlight at night, with the comet, stars, mountain and the surrounding forest reflecting in the still, mirror-like waters of Trillium Lake. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood Reflecting in Trillium Lake

This was one of the first photos of NEOWISE I planned out before my long, 3 week 6,000 mile journey chasing the comet started. It was taken very early on in the journey, on the 9 year anniversary of my father's passing. I had a very narrow window date wise to take this before NEOWISE would no longer be in the right place in the sky. I actually tried for it one day earlier, but clouds rolled in at night almost completely covering the mountain. As I tried again the next night, I hoped that maybe Dad would put in a good word and the skies would stay clear.

Conditions couldn't have been better. The lake was still and the reflection was like a mirror as NEOWISE shined bright in the sky to the right of Mount Hood. It was a truly magical sight, and as I stood there with my wife and son with no one else around us, I couldn't help but think that Dad was right there with us.
