Morning Hour - Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood and Trillium Lake Reflections as Dawn Approaches
Trillium Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE over Mount Hood Reflecting in Trillium Lake as Dawn Approaches, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) and the stars above fade into the morning sky during nautical twilight as the warm yellow colors of the fast approaching sunrise and as a soft magenta alpenglow illuminates Mount Hood and the skies above as dawn approaches. Fog rises up from the water on the far side of Trillium Lake beneath the mountain while also rising up from the evergreen pine and fir trees of the Mount Hood National Forest across the lake.
Mount Hood and Comet NEOWISE create a perfect mirror reflection in the water, as the last stars of night above fade into the glow of sunrise creeping up on the horizon. Living only an hour from here, I've been visiting this place since I was a child and over 4 decades later it still takes my breath away. From this angle, a dead tree trunk points straight up at the Mount Hood and its peak, which I've always thought was fitting as the mountain rises above the lake and forest in all its grandeur. These quiet mornings, where fog softly rises from Trillium Lake as the glow of sunrise bathes the sky and alpenglow bathes the slopes of Mount Hood have always been a favorite of mine. It's a conjunction of elements that creates a feeling of peace and unity.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Comet NEOWISE rising above Mount Hood as dawn approaches, with the comet, mountain and the surrounding forest reflecting in the still, mirror-like waters of Trillium Lake. Fog rises from the lake and forest behind Mount Hood, as the last stars of night begin to fade into the approaching morning light. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
Mount Hood, Trillium Lake, Comet NEOWISE and a Morning to Remember
I'll always look back on the summer of 2020 fondly, which I know is ironic all things considered. But this experience was so magical, it was one of the highlights of my career. I spent 3 weeks driving all over Oregon and Washington with my wife and son, sleeping in our vehicle and photographing NEOWISE non-stop until it faded away into the night sky for another 6800 years. It may have been 6,000 miles driven across 3 week, but it was some the most fun I've ever had.
This piece was taken early on in what I call "The Great NEOWISE Chase," when you could still see NEOWISE in the early morning light. The comet was one of the last things to fade into the dawn sky on this day, and the colors of the fast approaching dawn mixed with a hint of alpenglow on Mount Hood was simply surreal to see against the backdrop the entire scene reflecting in the mirror like waters as morning fog rose from the lake. It's been years now since that magical summer, and to be honest I still miss it. I think it's an important reminder: life's whatever you make it regardless of circumstances, so make it a good one!

Comet NEOWISE will not return to our solar system for another 6800 years (in approximately the year 8820 AD), making photos of Comet NEOWISE far more than just a once in a lifetime experience.
