Fall Colors on the Pacific Albus Poplar trees of the Boardman Tree Farm during the Golden Hour, Morrow County, Oregon

The warm glow of the Golden Hour setting sun shines through the Pacific Albus Hybrid Poplar Trees of the Boardman Tree Farm near sunset, illuminating their white bark as fall colors decorate the leaves of Hybrid Poplar Trees while the form symmetrical rows of trees in Morrow County near Boardman, Oregon. These trees stood evenly spaced and of equal height, stretching for 25,000 acres, and were among the most magnificent displays of fall color in the entire State of Oregon.

Boise Cascade created the Boardman Tree Farm in 1990 as a source of sustainable wood for their paper and pulp products. It was sold in 2007 to GreenWood Resources, who would own it until it December 2015 when it was sold to Willow Creek Dairy (1/3 of the acreage) and AgriNorthwest (the remaining 2/3 of acreage). They would begin harvesting the trees shortly after, and by November 2017 when I took my photo Last Fall, only one grove remained. This photo captures the tree farm in its full, original 25,000 acre state.

It was always once of my favorite sights each and every autumn, and it's one I visited most of my life, from the time Boise Cascade first planted saplings in 1990 until the very last final grove was harvested in late 2017 and early 2018. Now, the land is used to grow potatoes, which is ironic since I am allergic to potatoes. Still, the beauty of this place is frozen in time forever through the wonders of photography. It allows us to travel back to this magnificent place, and view what was once one of Oregon's most unique displays of fall color.

Fine art landscape photograph of peak fall color at the Boardman Tree Farm in Morrow County near Boardman, Oregon. This image captures the Pacific Albus Hybrid Poplar trees in full fall color at the now gone tree farm, preserving a unique moment in time in one of Oregon's most unique places. The Magic of Fall: Autumn at the Boardman Tree Farm

This was always one of the most wonderous sights I ever laid eyes on in the fall. When the Pacific Albus Hybrid Poplar trees of the Boardman Tree Farm lit up with fall colors, it unveiled a 25,000 acre forest of equally spaced, autumn beauty unlike anything else on Earth. As a lifelong Oregonian, it was a unique sight I looked forward to each and every fall. Nothing quite matched the autumn glory of 25,000 acres of equally spaced trees in even rows, showing off their full grandeur of fall colors.

This scene was one of Oregon's most famous fall sights, and rightfully so. It's unique beauty was unmatched anywhere else. Sadly, this sight is no more: GreenWood Resources (also known as Greenwood Tree Farms) sold the Boardman Tree Farm to a pair of agricultural companies. For the first time since the tree farm was established in 1990, the trees were all harvested without re-planting, erasing this once 25,000 acre Poplar forest from existence. The land is now used for agriculture crops. As a result, the only way to peer into this man made forest is through historical photographs like this one.

Historical Note

This image preserves a now historical landscape that no longer exists; the Boardman Tree Farm was sold by GreenWood Resources in January 2016 to Willow Creek Dairy (1/3 of the acreage) and AgriNorthwest (the remaining 2/3). The Willow Creek (Lost Valley Ranch) Dairy was closed within 2 years, and its permit revoked by the State of Oregon due to violating the terms of their wastewater discharge permit (nitrate contamination). Now, the land is 100% cropland used by AgriNorthwest out of the Tri-Cities. This image represents a rare documentation of a landscape that no longer exists (and will never exist again), due to ownership and land use changes.

Note on Provenance

Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
