'Osakazuki' Japanese Maple with Vibrant Peak Fall Colors in the Autumn in a Private Botanical Garden in Lake Oswego, Oregon

Peak Fall brings vibrant red colored leaves to an 'Osakazuki' Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'), as it looks like a crimson web against the backdrop of a blue sky. 'Osakazuki' Japanese Maples are an upright Japanese Maple which can grow to be 15-25 feet tall, and this over 60 year old specimen is a fine example of that. The fiery crimson, red and orange colors the leaves turn during peak fall color is always a sight to see. They reach peak fall color around the end of October and early November, are among the last to show their peak fall color, and they hold their peak color longer than other varieties of Japanese Maple.

Nature’s Resilience: Crimson Web of the 'Osakazuki' Japanese Maple

This photograph is an intimate view of nature's beauty from the small Japanese Garden in my own backyard, looking straight up through the crown of an over 60 year old 'Osakazuki' Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'). This tree is more than just a beautiful subject, it's a part of my family’s history and older than I am. My parents planted it before I was born, and it has moved with us across the decades, eventually settling here in Lake Oswego.

For years, I sat on a yellow metal bench beneath its canopy, appreciating the gorgeous structural architecture of its branches. One autumn afternoon, while sitting on the bench staring up into its intricate crimson web of leaves, I noted how magical the intimate scene was. This view was always a beautiful sight, and it was one I always appreciated each and every fall when peak colors arrived. I had my camera with me, so I quickly captured this wonder of nature and the fleeting moments of fall that graced its branches.

Now, this is a view that can never quite be replicated. In the late winter of 2021, a massive ice storm brought down a neighbor’s large ice-covered tree, while also bringing down a large tree from city property, which both fell directly onto our Japanese Maple and sheared its 25-30 foot crown in half. The lower half of the tree somehow survived, and the arborist did a great job ensuring our tree could recover and grown a new crown. It's still tall, and still produces wondrous colors every autumn, a testament to nature’s incredible resilience. Our Japanese Maple continues to grow, and even without the original crown the leaves still continue to turn their brilliant shades of color each autumn, a different but still beautiful view up into the wondrous web of leaves.
