The Milky Way rises high into the skies over the Badwater Basin salt flats and Badwater Pool in Death Valley National Park as the stars above reflect in the spring fed pool of water from which Badwater Basin got its name. Saturn shines brightly on the horizon at the left edge of the milky Way, as Telescope Peak and the Panamint Range rise up in the background to an elevation of 11,049 feet according to the NPS. It creates an 11,331 foot vertical rise from -282 foot Badwater Basin across just 17 miles, a greater vertical relief than the south rim of the Grand Canyon, one of the most dramatic elevation contrasts on Earth. From the Panamint Range ridgeline, you can simultaneously see both Mount Whitney (highest point in the contiguous US) and Badwater Basin (lowest point in the contiguous US).

Life in Badwater Basin: One of the Wonders of Nature
There's something about seeing water in Badwater Basin that always captivates me. Contrary to popular belief, Badwater Basin does have water year round in the form of this spring fed pool commonly known as Badwater Pool. Once the cool temperatures of early November roll around and the Milky Way rises overhead, it's quite a stunning sight to witness permanent water reflecting the stars in the sky above, with hints of airglow mixed in.
Badwater Basin is known as a desolate place where nothing grows, yet lining the eastern shoreline of the pool is pickleweed, a salt tolerant plant. Badwater pool is even home to animal life, as the Badwater snail (Angustassiminea infima) lives here. It's an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
It's quite a mix of things to take in, and it always leaves me with a feeling of wonder. It's amazing to see how nature always finds a way no matter how harsh the conditions, and perhaps there's no better example of that than places like this one, where a permanent salty pool of water sits at the edge of an inhospitable salt flat, with plants growing next to it and animal life thriving in it. The wonders of nature never cease to amaze me, and it's the hidden wonders like this that Death Valley is filled with that always keep me coming back.
History and Geology of Badwater Basin: The Lowest Elevation in North America
Badwater Basin is the lowest elevation in North America at -282 feet below sea level, with the salt and mineral deposits found in the salt flats here measuring from 3 inches up to 5 feet thick in some places, below which lies a thick layer of mud. Lake Manly formed here between 185,000 - 128,000 years ago, reaching 80 to 100 miles long, 6 to 11 miles wide and 600 feet deep. With no outlet, the waters of ancient Lake Manly deposited salt and other minerals into the lake bed as it dried out over thousands of years. It dried up between 10,000 and 35,000 years ago, leaving behind the Badwater Basin salt flats we know today, and the muddy layer of sediment underneath.
The hexagon shapes in the salt flat form through a process of freeze-thaw and evaporation cycles. The 150 inch per year evaporation rate creates the raised white honeycomb shaped hexagon patterns as the salt contracts and breaks. The salt flats naturally form the hexagon patterns because a hexagon pattern is the most energy efficient pattern to cover the ground. Badwater Basin spans over 200 square miles and is composed of approximately 95% sodium chloride (table salt), with traces of gypsum, calcite and borax.
Legend has it that the name Badwater Basin came from an early surveyor, whose mule refused to drink from the spring fed pool near the present day boardwalk. The water wasn't actually bad, it just has a high salinity. The spring fed pool near the boardwalk is lined with salt tolerant plants such as pickleweed, which can be seen growing next to the spring's pool as seen in the photograph above. The pool is home to the Badwater snail (Angustassiminea infima), an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. As of 2001, the Badwater snail population had declined to approximately 15% of its natural distribution due to water level decreases and trampling by visitors.
Note: Telescope Peak rises to 11,043 feet above sea level according to the National Geodetic Survey and NOAA (NAVD 88, NGS Benchmark GS0799), the highest peak in Death Valley National Park. The NPS lists the elevation as 11,049 feet, a slight variation reflecting different measurement datums and methodologies. The vertical rise from Badwater Basin to Telescope Peak using the NAVD 88 measurement is 11,325 feet. This is likely the more accurate measurement, but I've opted to quote the NPS measurement above to match their official website pages.

Technical Note
A high-resolution panoramic stitch [1:1 Square Aspect Ratio] of 4 single exposure images using a nodal rail and L-bracket on a 3-way pan and tilt panoramic head for nodal point accuracy. The 376 second foreground exposure was required to reveal the full detail of the salt flat, pickleweed and surroundings, but left star trails in Badwater Pool, which was not authentic to the scene. A separate 25 second exposure was taken without moving the camera or tripod to capture the stars reflecting naturally in the pool, which was then blended precisely into the foreground to replace the trailed pool reflection. The result preserves the authentic relationship between the night sky, its reflection in Badwater Pool, and the surrounding landscape, exactly as the scene appeared.
