Floodwaters from rain storms on October 18, 2015 flood Badwater Basin, forming Lake Manly as the Milky Way rises high into the night skies above. Airglow and the stars in the night sky reflect off the calm, still waters of Lake Manly as it re-forms in the salt flats of Badwater Basin between the Panamint Range and the Black Mountains (a sub range of the Amargosa Range).
This photo of Lake Manly in Badwater Basin with the Milky Way Spiral Arm overhead as seen from Dante's View was taken shortly after Dante's View Road reopened. Badwater Road would not partially reopen after the October 2015 floods until the night of November 13, 2015. Mount Williamson in the Sierra Nevada is visible 93 miles from Dante's View. At 14,379 feet it is the second highest peak in the contiguous US, and is considered the mount technically challenging climbing peak in the Sierra Nevada range. Many people mistake Mount Whitney as visible from Dante's View, but it is not. It is visible from a different spot in the park.

The History of Lake Manly
Lake Manly formed between the Panamint Range and Amargosa Range between 185,000 - 128,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, reaching 80 to 100 miles long, 6 to 11 miles wide and 600 feet deep covering areas which today include Badwater Basin, Devils Golf Course and Furnace Creek. It dried up between 10,000 and 35,000 years ago as the last ice age came to an end, leaving behind the salt flats of Badwater Basin and Devils Golf Course we know today, as well as the muddy layer of sediment underneath. Shoreline Butte south of Badwater Basin features wave cut benches higher up the slopes, leftover geologic marks from ancient Lake Manly.
What Causes Modern Lake Manly to Form?
Today, Lake Manly reforms temporarily at Badwater Basin after heavy rain storms as a shallow lake, usually 2-4 inches deep though on occasion it has reached depths of 2 feet. However, due to the 150 inch per year evaporation rate of Badwater Basin, the waters of Lake Manly never last very long, eventually drying up as Badwater Basin re-emerge once again. The salt pan of Death Valley we know and explore today is the dried up lake bed of ancient Lake Manly.
October 2015 Lake Manly Return
On October 17, 2015, Death Valley received 0.5 inches of rain. On the night of October 18, 2015, 2.75 inches more of rain fell in just 5 hours over the Grapevine Mountains and Grapevine Canyon. 1.23 inches of rain fell at Furnace Creek. This was more than a years worth of rain for the area, as Death Valley National Park collectively only sees 2 inches of rain per year on average with Badwater Basin seeing on average 1.9 inches of rain per year. Billed as a 1,000 year flood, this caused flash flooding to descend upon Death Valley, destroying roads, campgrounds, causing significant damage to Scotty's Castle. The flood running through Grapevine Canyon near Scotty's Castle was so large, it was 1/4 the size of the Colorado River, changing the shape of the canyon floor. Metal dumpsters floated out of Grapevine Canyon, the road to Dante's View was temporarily closed, and Badwater Road was temporarily closed as most the rain eventually settled in Badwater Basin, temporarily reforming Lake Manly.
At the time of the October 2015 flood, it was largest flood event in the recorded history of the area. A 1,000 year flood doesn't mean it happens once per 1,000 years, it means there is a 0.1% chance of the rain and flooding occurring in any given year, and since October 2015 two more 1,000 year floods have occurred in Death Valley: August 2022 (which dropped 1.46" of rain at Furnace Creek in 3 hours) and August 2023, when the remnants of Hurricane Hilary (an extremely rare west coast hurricane) dropped 2.2 inches of rain at Furnace Creek in a single day.
This photo of Lake Manly in Badwater Basin with the Milky Way Spiral Arm overhead was taken November 2015, shortly after Dante's View Road reopened and just before the northern section of Badwater Road partially reopened following the October 2015 floods. Although the northern section of Badwater Road reopened the night of November 13, 2015, the entire length of Badwater Road would not be reopen and would not be fully repaired until July 22, 2016. Scotty's Castle remained closed until January 2026, 11 years after the flooding occurred, when the park service finally completed enough repairs to offer tours on a limited basis from January 4, 2026 to March 29, 2026.

Historical Note on Lake Manly
In modern documented history, Lake Manly has reappeared in 2005, 2015, 2022, 2023-2024, and late 2025, though NASA notes it has reformed 'at several times for thousands of years,' suggesting earlier undocumented modern appearances. The August 2022 reappearance was its shortest, lasting approximately 24 hours as confirmed by NASA satellite imagery. The 2005 reappearance is documented by NASA Landsat 5 satellite imagery, showing Lake Manly forming in February 2005 and drying up by May 2005, lasting approximately 3 months. The October 2015 reappearance is documented firsthand in my photograph Return to the Past and time spent in Death Valley during the flooding.
