Emerald Slumber - Milky Way over Mount Hood and Inspiration Point in the Mount Hood National Forest

Inspiration Point, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

The Milky Way, Airglow, and a Meteor over Mount Hood, Inspiration Point and the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon

The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above Mount Hood and tall trees of the Mount Hood National Forest framing the mountain as an Alpha Capricornids meteor streaks across the sky above the north side of Mount Hood. Green and orange airglow illuminates the sky as a green-yellow meteor fireball from the Alpha Capricornids meteor shower streaks across the sky from near the meteor showers radiant.

The Eliot Glacier, Langille Glacier and Coe Glacier blanket the slopes of Mount Hood, as the burn scar from the 2008 Gnarl Ridge Fire and the 2011 Dollar Lake Fire, both caused by lightning strikes, can be seen below the upper slopes of Mount Hood, behind the tall trees rising up in the foreground as Eliot Branch Canyon cuts deep into the landscape below Inspiration Point on its way down from Mount Hood. Eliot Branch Canyon cuts down from the Eliot Glacier, the largest glacier on Mount Hood. It's cut by flooding and water flow from the glacier melt water originating on Eliot Glacier above.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the Milky Way, green airglow and orange airglow, and an Alpha Capricornids meteor above the Mount Hood National Forest on the mountain's north side. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Grandeur of Inspiration Point and Mount Hood under a Blanket of Stars

The view from the north side of Mount Hood from Inspiration Point near Cloud Cap Road is rugged. I've always enjoyed the north side of the mountain. It showcases three glaciers, including Mount Hood's largest glacier, the Eliot Glacier, along with the massive Coe Glacier and the smaller Langille Glacier. 100 years ago, the view at Inspiration Point was a more open view along the Mount Hood Highway Loop. Today, it's off from the current highway alignment and trees grow in the foreground of the historic viewpoint. Although it's a very different view today, it's still an underrated gem on the mountain's rugged north side.

At times, I've gotten in front of the trees down the slope a bit for a clean view straight into Eliot Branch Canyon, but this night the trees framing Mount Hood at Inspiration Point caught my eye. Mount Hood and its three visible glaciers rise up above the Mount Hood National Forest, Eliot Branch Canyon and the burn scars from the Gnarl Ridge and Dollar Lake fires as large trees near the top of Inspiration Point frame the mountain's rugged north face. An Alpha Capricornids meteor streaked across the night sky from the meteor shower's radiant, glowing green-yellow instead of the more common orange-yellow, as the Milky Way rose straight up next to Mount Hood while green and orange airglow blanketed the sky.

It was a wondrous sight, standing amongst the trees as I looked out at Oregon's grandest mountain cathedral and the heavens above. Mount Hood has always been a special place for me. I grew up visiting the mountain as a young child, and over 40 years later I still enjoy visiting this sacred alpine landscape. Mount Hood is a thin place, one of those rare places which seems to blur the lines between Heaven and Earth. Time always seems to stand still when I'm up here, and even though the view from Inspiration Point has changed over 100 plus years, the grandeur of this mountain temple under a blanket of stars and the Milky Way has not.
