Comet NEOWISE over Foggy Trillium Lake under Moonlight in the Mount Hood National Forest of Oregon

Moonlight illuminates Trillium Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest as fog rises above the water while Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) shines in the skies above, reflecting in the water of the lake below. Stars shine in the early morning skies as the 64.4% Waning Gibbous moon illuminates the trees lining the shore and the water of Trillium Lake below.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the Comet NEOWISE Reflecting in Trillium Lake under Moonlight. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Comet NEOWISE Reflections as Fog Rises from Trillium Lake: Morning Magic in the Summer of 2020

I spent roughly 3 weeks chasing Comet NEOWISE, driving all over Oregon and Washington to photograph it over carefully planned compositions. I made several trips to Mount Hood during this time, which I always found rewarding. I've been visiting Mount Hood almost my entire life, so witnessing a once in a lifetime comet in the skies above was truly a memory I'll cherish forever.

It was very early morning, a little before 4am, and as night began to wane fog began to rise from Trillium Lake, blanketing the water in an ethereal coat of magical vapors. The trees lining the shore reflected in the still waters of the lake along with Comet NEOWISE, with the comet and the top of the tree line reflection just visible from past the layer of fog.

Comet NEOWISE shined brightly in the night skies above the lower southern slopes of Mount Hood, almost directly above one of the tall trees lining the shore of Trillium Lake. Stars hung on in the fading moonlit night skies above as the early morning sun, -13.3 degrees below the horizon, began to cast a warm glow into the early morning skies as night began to fade away.

The stars begin to fade quickly as nautical dawn approaches, It's always a treat to witness the light transitioning from the dark of night towards approaching dawn, but it was especially memorable witnessing that transition as Comet NEOWISE streaked across the night skies above for the first time in 6800 years. I've always found Mount Hood and Trillium Lake peaceful and serene during these early morning hours. I've always found Mount Hood and Trillium Lake a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, so it was particularly fitting this morning to witness the beauty of the foggy waters and forests surrounding Oregon's holiest mountain cathedral as NEOWISE shined brightly in the heavens above. The world may have been locked down for most of 2020, but chasing Comet NEOWISE that summer is an experience I'll always cherish.
