The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above the evergreen pine and fir trees of the Mount Hood National Forest as the airglow and the tree line along the shore casts a reflection in the still, silent waters of Trillium Lake. Grass grows along the shoreline and in the marshy sections of the lake, as green and orange airglow illuminates the night skies surrounding the Scutum Star Cloud, the Small Sagittarius Cloud and The Great Rift.

Heavens Above: The Wonders of the Milky Way over Trillium Lake
The Milky Way was looking beautiful this night, with the stars directly overhead seemingly having a slight twinkle to them. I thought about possible compositions based on the Milky Way's alignment, and having spent a lifetime visiting Mount Hood and Trillium Lake I knew just the spot. The night scene at Trillium Lake was so peaceful and serene it felt like something out of a dream, which is expected in a place filled with beauty and wonder in seemingly every direction.
Stars appear to twinkle under dark skies due to the temperature variations in the Earth's atmosphere as the light moves towards us. Under dark skies it's easier to see this beauty, and Trillium Lake has some wonderfully dark skies. The water of Trillium Lake was calm and still, the stars were twinkling and shimmering overhead, and there were no sounds anywhere except the sound of silence. It's always relaxing, staring up at the night sky and taking in the views above the majesty of Trillium Lake and the Mount Hood National Forest. Whatever worries you may have seem to melt away, and time stands still as you get lost in the peace and serenity of nature.
Moments like this are a luxury far too many people don't have with all the light pollution found in cities, and I'm truly grateful places like Mount Hood and Trillium Lake still exist, with dark skies where the Milky Way shines brightly and the stars still twinkle overhead in the heavens above. It was truly a wonderful, serene moment in a place that feels like it was straight out of yesteryear. There's nothing quite like a peaceful night up in the mountains next to an alpine lake. Time always seems to stand still when I'm up here, and for a brief moment I always feel like I'm back in the forests 200 years ago, exploring the beauty of nature still pristine and untouched.
