Alpine Glass - Milky Way and Mount Hood Reflections in Lost Lake
Lost Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
The Milky Way over Mount Hood Reflecting in Lost Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest of Oregon
The Milky Way rises high into the night sky over Mount Hood and Lost Lake as the Milky Way and Mount Hood reflect like a mirror in the still, calm water of the lake. Airglow blankets the night sky above the Mount Hood National Forest as the Dark Horse Nebula and Large Sagittarius Star Cloud create a beautiful reflection in the water as they rise overhead in the night skies above Mount Hood.
Illumination Rock and Barrett Spur rise from Mount Hood's snow covered slopes as Sentinel Peak towers above Lost Lake to the right of the mountain. Six named glaciers make their appearance from this angle as Coe Glacier, Ladd Glacier, Glisan Glacier, Sandy Glacier, Little Sandy Glacier, and Reid Glacier all blanket the upper slopes of Mount Hood in a beautiful coat of snow and ice.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the Milky Way rising above Mount Hood and Lost Lake as the mountain and the Milky Way reflect in the waters of the lake like a perfect mirror. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Silent Beauty of Mount Hood and the Milky Way at Night
There's something about spending a night in the Mount Hood National Forest while the Milky Way and a blanket of stars cover the night sky above Mount Hood which always captivates the soul. It's a beautiful, surreal tranquility which blends the grandeur of Oregon's highest mountain peak with the wonders of the heavens above. When Lost Lake lies still and silent, it turns into a glassy mirror of water which casts a perfect reflection of Mount Hood and the Milky Way above.
This was actually the last night photoshoot I would have in 2016 before I would test positive for Lyme disease and Bartonella. It wasn't the cause of it by any means, but the peace and serenity I found that night is something I'll never forget. I suppose the Lyme tax was always going to be something I would end up having to pay someday. That's the price you pay when inspiration in nature leads and bushwhacking consistently gets the better of you.
I've always found Lost Lake a beautiful, serene spot. Alpine beauty always stirs my soul. This view isn't quite as picture perfect as Trillium Lake in terms of the way Mount Hood rises above the landscape, but that's part of its charm. The glaciers on the northern side of Mount Hood are larger than those on the southern side, so the snow and ice on the glaciers blanketing the slopes on this side of the mountain create a beautiful snow covered sight deeper into the summer. It's a gorgeous sight to witness Mount Hood and its snow covered slopes rising above a sheet of alpine glass perfectly reflected in the waters of Lost Lake below, especially when the Milky Way rises above the mountain while creating a perfect reflection in the water.
There's a calm and tranquility around Mount Hood at night, especially when you're standing next to a peaceful lake as the alpine peak of the mountain and Milky Way rises above. You can feel the cold mountain air brush past your cheeks as the wonders of the universe unfold overhead. I particularly love the fact that the Large Sagittarius Star Cloud, the Dark Horse Nebula, Mount Hood and the surrounding forest reflect perfectly in the water.
Time always seems to stand still in the mountains under a blanket of stars. It's a peaceful wonderland where the majesty of Mount Hood, my first love as a child, combines with the splendor of the heavens to create something timeless in a manner only nature can. Time slows down when I'm out here in the mountains surrounded by the heavens above, and over 4 decades since I first visited Mount Hood as a child time still seems to stop whenever I'm here. There's a silent beauty when you experience Mount Hood under the Milky Way and a blanket of stars. It's a thin place which feels like it blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and Lyme tax or not, that's one of the things which always keeps drawing me back into nature.
