Fed by the White River Glacier on the southern slopes of Mount Hood in Oregon, the wild and scenic White River (a glacial river) flows down from the mountain through its lower southern slopes, cutting a new channel after winter and spring flooding in early 2021 changed the landscape and moved the river further east in White River Canyon. Pine and fir trees grow in the Mount Hood National Forest surrounding this part of the White River on the lower slopes of Mount Hood, with new growth mixed in amongst the more established growth. Bonney Butte and Barlow Ridge rise up above the White River in the distance as dark foreboding storm clouds line the skies above.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the dark storm clouds above the glacial White River flowing down Mount Hood after flooding caused it to cut a new channel through the Mount Hood National Forest. Documenting the White River's Channel Shift in Spring 2021
I've been visiting Mount Hood for my entire life, and I've always enjoyed the glacial White River on Mount Hood's lower southern slopes. It originates at the foot of the White River Glacier on the slopes of Mount Hood, and it gets its name from the glacial flour caused by the glacier grinding the underlying rock, which becomes suspended in the water giving the White River its namesake milky color. The White River is known to flood the rocky boulder covered area through White River Canyon below the glacier. In November 2006, massive flooding washed out the White River Bridge on Highway 35. Construction repairs were done in a manner to ensure future flooding did not wipe out the new bridge.
In spring 2021, the river shifted its channel. I live roughly an hour away from here, so I frequently visit the White River. Through photography and repeated visits to the White River, I've tracked its course over the years. When I visited in June 2021, I noticed the river's previous channel under the main span of the bridge was dry. The river had shifted eastward by quite a bit. I was able to document through visits and photography that it abandoned its previous channel and changed paths further east in White River Canyon sometime between April 21, 2021, and June 7, 2021.
The shift in the White River's channel occurred about 1 mile above the Highway 35 Bridge over the river, and the change in the river's channel was causing by spring flooding and was quite abrupt. The river's new channel is actually quite beautiful compared to the barren landscape of its previous one. Although it still flows through the rocky section of White River Canyon above the bridge, downstream from the bridge a drastic shift in landscape surrounding the river occurred. The 2021 flooding which caused the river’s new channel did not impact the bridge, as the reconstruction of it after the 2006 flooding added a second span east of the main channel. The foresight proved beneficial, as the river now flows under this second span of the bridge.
The previous channel took the river through a barren floodplain, but the new channel took it through newer growth in the Mount Hood National Forest east of the old channel. The river cut an approximately 20 foot deep channel through the loose floodplain soil in this section, but the surrounding landscape here proved to be a beautiful change. Young shrubs and trees mix in with more mature trees here, as the gray rocks mix with the soil to create a beautiful color palette. At times the soil appears the standard brown, but other times red hues mix in with the soil, creating a beautiful color palette of red, brown, green, and gray as the milky White River flows down its new path cut into the softer sections of the soil.
It's always exciting to document a change in the landscape like this, and I especially enjoyed the visual beauty of the new path the river takes through here on its way down Mount Hood. Witnessing the change under a blanket of storm clouds seemed fitting, considering flooding caused the channel shift in the first place. It's a beautiful, serene scene filled with visual cues reminding you of the raw power of nature, and it’s a reminder that the landscape surrounding the river below the glacier here is ever-changing.
