Divide - White River Winter Moonlight on Mount Hood and the White River Snowfield

White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

The Glacial White River Flows Down Snowy Mount Hood in the Winter at Night under Moonlight, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Beneath a winter night sky, the White River (a glacial river originating on the White River Glacier) carves its way through the White River Snowfield as it flows down Mount Hood, cutting a frozen divide into the snowfield as moonlight paints the landscape in silver light. Bonney Butte and Barlow Ridge rise up above the White River in the distance, as large rocks and boulders washed down from the mountain during flooding lie covered in a blanket of snow in the river's floodplain.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the glacial White River in the winter flowing down Mount Hood through the White River Snowfield. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Wonders of Winter on Mount Hood: The White River and White River Snowfield under Moonlight

The White River gets its name from the white color of the water, which is caused by glacial flour from the White River Glacier above its headwaters grinding the underlying rock, which becomes suspended in the water as it flows down the mountain. The movement of the glacial grinds the rocks into fine silt-like flour, which gets trapped in the water giving the river its namesake milky, chalk-like color. I've always felt the milky color of the White River is magical sight in the winter set against the bright white snowfield that lines the lower slopes of Mount Hood here.

It's a beautiful set of complementary colors, as the milky water of the White River flows through a field of white snow and ice. It's winter on Mount Hood at its finest, especially under moonlight when the silver color of the moon high in the sky bathes the landscape below in an ethereal light. I particularly liked how the White River divided the snowfield into two halves right here, and the large rocks visible along the shore of the river are the perfect rugged contrast to the peaceful solitude of winter.

This has always been one of my favorite spots on Mount Hood in the winter. It was cold this night at around 14 degrees Fahrenheit, but bundled up in full winter gear kept me warm and toasty as I made my way across the snowfield in snowshoes. There's something magical about winter in the Cascade Range. I spent my youth sledding on Mount Hood in the winter, and over 40 years later I still enjoy the winter wonderland of Mount Hood covered in a blanket of snow. The stars overhead are the perfect complement to the snow covered landscape below, and the slight turquoise glow on the horizon was a wondrous sight to see.

I could live forever in these cold winter moments up on Mount Hood, where it feels like you've been transported to the mountains of Heaven. As kid, I always got sad when winter ended in "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe." I've always been drawn to the wonders of winter, and a lifetime later I still am. Time always stands still on these cold moonlit nights up in the mountains, and that's one of the reasons I always find my way back here. No matter how many times I've been here, the mesmerizing beauty of winter always takes my breath away like it's the first time I've laid eyes on it. John Muir once said “going to the mountains is going home,” and for me that’s exactly what going to Mount Hood is.
