Chilled - Mount Hood Moonlight Reflections in Partially Frozen Trillium Lake
Trillium Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Moonlight over Mount Hood Reflecting in Trillium Lake as Ice Patches Float in the Water, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Moonlight from the almost full Waning Gibbous Moon illuminates Mount Hood, Eureka Peak, the pine and fir trees of the Mount Hood National Forest and the night sky as a patch of ice floats in the mirror-like still waters of Trillium Lake as it begins to freeze over for the winter.
Zigzag Glacier, Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield), and the White River Glacier blanket the upper slopes of Mount Hood above Timberline as the moonlight illuminates the clouds in the night sky with a warm glow. The clouds streak across the sky, as stars shine through the breaks in between the clouds as the scene casts a perfect mirror reflection in the still water of Trillium Lake while a lone rock rises up from the water near the shore.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Mount Hood at the brink of winter reflecting in the mirror-like water of Trillium Lake as ice patches float in the still water. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Wonders of Early Winter on Mount Hood, Trillium Lake, and the Cascade Range
I absolutely love it up in the mountains of the Cascade Range in the early winter when the weather begins the transition from fall to winter. The cold, crisp air arrives as the water of the alpine lakes around Mount Hood begins to freeze over. There were a few ice patches floating around towards the shore of Trillium Lake this night, the perfect complement to the season transitioning from autumn to winter. It's that moment just before the first snow begins to fall in late November as early winter sets in.
The warm glow of the moon reflected off the streaks of clouds in the sky above, bathing the scene in soft, ethereal light as Mount Hood peeks out from behind the ridgeline that forms Eureka Peak. The way the clouds streaked across the sky was reminiscent of highways in the heavens above, and seeing their perfect reflection along with Mount Hood and Eureka Peak in the mirror-like water of Trillium Lake was a mesmerizing sight.
The waters of Trillium Lake were incredibly still this night, creating a mirror reflection only broken up by the patches of ice floating around the lake. The temperatures were in the mid 20s Fahrenheit. I've always enjoyed cold weather in the mountains. These cold, crisp, chilled nights where everything stands still in absolute perfection are always my favorite. I've been visiting Mount Hood for my entire life, and over 4 decades later I still enjoy these cold nights at the brink of winter the most.
There's a chill in the air, yet it always seems to warm my soul when the ethereal magic of nature springs to life on these cold nights. I could stay out here forever, bundled up taking in the grandeur of nature in all its glory as Mount Hood transitions to winter. Moments like this always make time seem to stand still, and these quiet nights always seem to live on forever long after the moment has passed. There's magic in the cold air in the mountains, and the heavenly sight of Mount Hood rising above Trillium Lake as ice patches float in the water is something that will always draw me back to this thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth.
