Chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration produce an array of colors near Artist's Palette in the Black Mountains of Death Valley, California's eastern side
This abstract photo (captured at 335mm), isolates the vibrant mineral deposits found in the Black Mountains and Artist's Palette. These various colors are the result of the oxidation of metals embedded within the volcanic ash and rock. Iron-rich minerals produce the vivid reds, pinks, and yellows; mica and chlorite create the striking turquoises; and manganese produces the deep purples. This natural "painting" is the result of millions of years of chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration, proving that even the harshest environments can produce the most delicate art.
Symphony of Color at Artist's Palette and the Black Mountains
As I grabbed my tripod and camera bag loaded with wide-angle and super zoom lenses and hiked in towards Artist's Palette in the Black Mountains, I knew exactly what I was looking for. The colors here are phenomenal, and the way the colors from millions of years of geological processes paint an array of colors across the landscape of the Black Mountains is stunning. I needed a spot which captured all of that in all its grandeur, but close enough together I could use the compression of a super telephoto lens to really pull it all together and draw focus to the beauty nature has created here.
It's always fun exploring the canyons, mountains, playas and generally any off the beaten path place in Death Valley. At first glance it's such a desolate place, yet upon closer inspection it's filled with a wide variety of beauty and colors unlike almost any other place you'll find on Earth. It's incredibly unique here, and scenes like this are vintage Death Valley. It's nature in all its glory, taking something seemingly desolate and turning it into a subtle, beautiful masterpiece in a manner only nature can.
I knew this scene was the one the moment I laid eyes on it. It had everything: a wide array of colors as vibrant turquoise showed against the deep purples and yellows, all placed together close enough to draw it together with lens compression. I absolutely loved how the 335mm focal length drew all these elements together, transforming everything from an easy to miss palette of colors to a stunning artist's symphony worthy of a large-format print on a museum wall.
That's always been my favorite part about photography and nature, the way the combination enables you to take the most beautiful things in nature and package it together in something new and grand everyone can enjoy. I've always enjoyed the wide variety of beauty you can find in nature, but perhaps no place provides a better example of the abstract beauty of nature mixed with a wide feel that this glorious scene deep in the wonderful world of Artist Palette and the Black Mountains.

Artist's Palette and Artist's Drive Historical Note: What Created the Wonders Here
Artist's Palette is located in the Black Mountains of Death Valley along Artist's Drive, a 9-mile one way scenic loop off of Badwater Road in Death Valley National Park. The colors here are the result of volcanic eruptions which occurred over 5 million years ago. The geological formation is known as the Artist Drive Formation, a formation which is evidence of the most violent and explosive volcanic periods in Death Valley's history. It's a Miocene-aged formation made up of cemented gravel, playa deposits and volcanic debris up to 5,000 feet thick.
The eruptions deposited ash, metals and minerals such as iron, titanium, aluminum and mica into what is now known as Artist's Palette in the black mountains. Weathering and chemical alteration by heat, water and oxidation created the colorful landscape we see today. Like at the Painted Hills in Oregon, clouds, time of day and rainfall (which is rare in Death Valley) affect the intensity of the colors. Rare rainfall makes the colors more intense and vibrant compared to a sunny day, when they can appear more muted under the direct sunlight. Flash flooding during rare rainstorms can affect this area, and Artist's Drive itself was damaged during 2015 flash floods which also damaged Badwater Road and temporarily created Lake Manly. The damage took a little under a month to repair.
