Alpine Wonderland - Alpenglow Sunset on Mount Hood above the Timberline

Palmer Snowfield, Timberline, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow on Mount Hood and Palmer Snowfield at Sunset above Timberline in the Late Winter, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow illuminates the snow covered Mount Hood at sunset above Timberline, as the soft pastel colors of late winter light the clouds in the sky above. Zigzag Glacier, Palmer Glacier (now technically Palmer Snowfield since glacial movement stopped in the 1980s), Coalman Glacier, and White River Glacier glow magenta from alpenglow light, as Palmer chairlift makes its way up Palmer Snowfield from near Silcox Hut and the top of Magic Mile towards the top of the Palmer Glacier.

The Palmer chairlift ends near the top of the Palmer snowfield, just below the upper portions of Zigzag Glacier and White River Glacier. There's a gorgeous view of Illumination Rock and Crater Rock from this angle, as the snow covered southern slopes of Mount Hood rise up high above the Timberline to an elevation of 11,249 feet. Illumination Rock and Illumination Saddle are visible behind the Palmer chairlift. Coalman Glacier is visible high above Palmer Glacier and the White River Glacier, tucked next to Crater Rock.

Coalman Glacier, situated above Zigzag Glacier, Palmer Glacier, and White River Glacier, is the highest elevation glacier on Mount Hood. It sits just below the 11,249 foot summit of Mount Hood spanning an elevation range of 10,500 feet up to 11,200 feet. To the west it's surrounded by Crater Rock, to the northwest by Hawkins Ridge (also known as Hawkins Cliffs), and to the southeast Steel Cliff and the summit of Mount Hood to the north.

Palmer Glacier is home to the headwaters of the Salmon River, and the rugged upper portions of the Salmon River Canyon can be seen going up Mount Hood just below Palmer Snowfield. The Salmon River flows down Mount Hood from here, with the ridge on the far side separating Palmer Glacier, Salmon River Canyon, and Timberline from the White River Glacier and White River Canyon.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures winter alpenglow just after sunset on Mount Hood, Palmer Glacier, Zigzag Glacier, White River Glacier, and Coalman Glacier as the mountain rises above Timberline. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Alpenglow on Mount Hood and the Alpine Wonderlands of Heaven

There's something magical about Mount Hood in the late winter as it rises above Timberline. The wind was whipping around a good bit this evening, something which dropped the wind chill down but didn't really bother me since I tend to enjoy cold weather. Sunset was absolutely beautiful, but when the alpenglow which showed up just after sunset bathed Mount Hood and the glaciers above in a magnificent coat the alpine wonderland above me came alive.

I knew I'd want to keep a fast shutter speed due to the wind, something that really wasn't an issue. Wind and snow go hand in hand with elevation on mountains, so I took the time to slow down and take the entire scene in. Palmer chairlift, the highest elevation spring and summer chairlift in North America, can be seen going up the Palmer Snowfield, which is actually an extinct glacier known as Palmer Glacier. The glacier was still active when I was young, and in my youth we'd often visit Timberline where I'd stare up at the glacier and dream of going up it. Magic Mile was built in 1938, so visiting the glacier was possible but visiting the top of the glacier would have to wait (Palmer chairlift was built in 1996). In 1981, the glacier was measured at 200 feet thick so young me thought I'd have plenty of time to dream. By the time I was around 7 years old, glacial movement had stopped, but my lifelong fascination with Palmer Glacier never waned, and even if it did technically become a year-round snowfield the Palmer chairlift finally would allow me to achieve my childhood dream.

Coalman Glacier, the highest elevation glacier on Mount Hood can be seen above Palmer Glacier next to Crater Rock and just below the summit. It was a wondrous sight to witness no less than four of Mount Hood's named glaciers (Zigzag Glacier, Palmer Glacier, Coalman Glacier, and White River Glacier) bathed in glorious alpenglow.

The conditions were fantastic this evening. The clouds were a perfect balance of thin and thick, just enough to catch the alpenglow as purple and blue hues bathed the sky behind them. It was a perfect complement to the vibrant alpenglow on the slopes of Mount Hood. I've always loved Mount Hood above Timberline, it's a phenomenal sight to witness the mountain rising above the surrounding high elevation landscape as it glows in an ethereal coat of alpenglow light. Time always stands still when alpenglow makes an appearance, especially when it seemingly hangs on forever as it did this night. The magenta glow got more vibrant as time passed, and for a brief moment it felt as if I had been transported to a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth. Going to the mountains always feels like going home, and it always feels like that whenever I return to my thin place which feels like an alpine wonderland rising up from the mountains of Heaven.

Technical Note - The Art of the Panoramic Image During Windy Conditions

A high-resolution panoramic stitch [3x1 aspect ratio] of 8 single exposure images all taken at the exact same settings using a nodal rail and L-bracket on a 3-way pan and tilt panoramic head for nodal point accuracy, ensuring the final image preserves museum-grade detail and resolution across the entire frame, from the textures of the landscape to the details in the sky. A high ISO and fast shutter speed were utilized due to windy conditions.

Note on Provenance

Captured using the single exposure panoramic workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
