Winter moonlight illuminates snow-covered ridges of Salmon River Canyon on Mount Hood at the edge of the subalpine timberline

Over the Ridge - Winter Snow on Mount Hood and the Salmon River Canyon near Timberline

Winter on Snowy Mount Hood and the Salmon River Canyon under Moonlight near Timberline, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Partial moonlight in winter illuminates the snow covered ridges of the Salmon River Canyon on slopes of Mount Hood near Timberline, while the warm glow of distant lights from Mount Hood Meadows behind the ridge reflects off the distant fog and low cloud cover to create a sunrise-like glow in the clouds above.

I've always loved how so many seemingly simple things come together in this photo. The first snow covered ridge seen here is the east side of Salmon River Canyon, which originates higher up on the southern slopes of Mount Hood at the foot of the Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield) east of and above Silcox Hut. From there, the Salmon River flows down through the Salmon River Canyon and down towards the old-growth forest along the Salmon River Trail as it makes its way towards its confluence with the Sandy River.

Beyond the first ridge lies White River Canyon and the foot of the White River Glacier, and the second snow and tree covered ridge seen here is the east side of the White River Canyon. The Wild and Scenic White River originates here on the White River Glacier, flowing down through the canyon on its journey down the mountain towards its confluence with the Deschutes River.

Mount Hood Meadows lies just beyond the White River Canyon and the second ridge. When the fog and cloud cover are just right, they catch the lights from the ski area's night skiing and reflect off the clouds and fog, creating an ethereal sunrise-like glow in the middle of the night. Winter on Mount Hood is always magical, but there's something about a beautiful winter scene in the middle of the night glowing like sunrise which always captivates my soul.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Mount Hood and the Salmon River Canyon covered in snow during the winter with a sunrise-like glow illuminating the clouds above. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Unexpected Winter Beauty of the Salmon River Canyon and Mount Hood at Night

I always look for the unexpected beauty in nature, and this magical scene is one of those cases. The lights at night from behind and below the ridge caught the clouds in the sky, which diffused the light as if it was the glow of sunrise. Partial moonlight illuminated the foreground, leaving faintly visible shadows behind the trees. I love how the moonlight leaves a shadow line on the ridge, where the snow covered slopes steeply drop away. It's cold, vintage winter on Mount Hood mixed with unexpected warmth.

A bit above where I'm standing are the headwaters for the Salmon River which forms at the edge of Mount Hood's Palmer Glacier, where it then travels down the mountain below the ridge I'm standing on. It's always a beautiful scene, but the unexpected beauty coming from over the ridge transformed this beautiful winter wonderland into an ethereal beauty befitting of a place like Mount Hood. I've been coming up to Mount Hood since I was a young child, when my parents would bring me up to Mount Hood in a carrier, and as I got older we would go up the mountain for winter sledding, which is probably where my love for Mount Hood in the winter originates from. Over 45 years later, I still frequent this magical place. Along with the Oregon Coast and Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood was one of my first loves as a child growing up, and the ethereal winter magic here on the mountain is something that always keeps me coming back.
