Alpenglow illuminates the slopes of Mount Hood at Sunset as small wildflowers (shooting star, lupine, Gray's Lovage, Lyall's Anemone, and more) grow in a meadow

Alpine Majesty - Alpenglow Sunset on Mount Hood above a Subalpine Wildflower Meadow

North Slope Subalpine Meadow, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow on Mount Hood at Sunset above a Subalpine Wildflower Meadow on the North Slope, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Sunset lights the clouds in the sky above Mount Hood as alpenglow illuminates the slopes of the mountain. In a subalpine wildflower meadow on Mount Hood's lower north slopes, small wildflowers including Shooting Star, Lupine, Gray's Lovage, and Lyall's Anemone grow in the meadow at the edge of the forest. The alpenglow lights Barrett Spur, Pulpit Rock, Langille Crags, Eliot Glacier, Langille Glacier, and Coe Glacier on Mount Hood as the snow-covered slopes on the mountain's north face rise up above the meadow and forest below.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures alpenglow on Mount Hood at sunset as it rises above a subalpine meadow with wildflowers at the edge of a forest on the North Slope of Mount Hood. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of Alpenglow on Mount Hood: In the Subalpine Meadows of Heaven at Sunset

There's something magical about late spring and early summer on Mount Hood. The subalpine meadows at the edge of the forest lie covered in green, as small wildflowers grow amongst the green grasses and plants which line the meadow. Mount Hood generally still has a lot of snow on its glaciers this time of year, especially on the northern slopes of the mountain which receive less sunlight than the southern slopes. The alpenglow at sunset lights up a wonderful mix of snow, ice and rock as Mount Hood rises above the wildflowers in the subalpine meadows, unveiling the beauty of Mount Hood in all its grandeur.

Mount Hood is one of my favorite places in Oregon. I've been visiting it since I was a young child, and over 4 decades later I still enjoy exploring its hallowed grounds. There's nothing quite like seeing the mountain rise up at sunset in all its glory, as the Alpine Majesty of Oregon's tallest peak unfolds in front of me in real time while the magic colors of sunset arrive on its snow-covered slopes.

Mount Hood is filled with many famous, well known locations but sometimes it's the hidden places like this small subalpine meadow on the north slope which take my breath away. A lifetime of exploring Mount Hood means you experience all sorts of different beauty on and around the mountain, and this little hidden meadow has always been a favorite. It's peaceful and filled with serenity and tranquility, and a sunset here often feels like a thin place that blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth.

I'll never understand why Mount Rainier is a National Park and Mount Hood isn't but no matter, I still enjoy every minute I spend in Oregon's holiest mountain cathedral. There's a rugged, peaceful beauty all around Mount Hood, especially on its northern slopes. It's a place where all your troubles seem to melt away and the beauty of nature washes away all your worries. Sunsets on Mount Hood are pure bliss, and that's why after a lifetime of visiting the mountain I'll always find my way back to this wondrous place, eager to explore and see what magical sights await, ready to cleanse my soul as the beauty of nature makes time stand still in the mountains of Heaven.
