Winter's Kiss - Winter Alpenglow after Sunset on Snow Covered Mount Hood and the White River

White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Winter Alpenglow on Mount Hood above the White River and White River Canyon after Sunset in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

A soft magenta alpenglow sets fire to the glaciers and snow covered slopes of Mount Hood after sunset, as the glacial White River slices through the deep, snow and ice packed snowfield in White River Canyon below. Snow coats the trees of the Mount Hood National Forest as they rise on the slopes above the canyon, as Mount Hood rises above an ethereal layer of clouds blanketing its lower slopes below the Magic Mile and Palmer Snowfield.

Illumination Rock and Crater Rock rise up from the upper slopes of Mount Hood as White River Glacier, Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield since glacial movement stopped in the 1980s), and Newton Clark Glacier lie bathed in glorious alpenglow light as they blanket the slopes of Mount Hood in the winter. Snow covers the White River Snowfield below, transforming the White River Canyon into a wondrous winter wonderland as the White River makes its way down Mount Hood through an ethereal field of snow.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures winter alpenglow on Mount Hood, the White River Glacier, the Palmer Glacier, and the Newton Clark Glacier as the White River flows through the White River Snowfield below. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of Winter Alpenglow on Mount Hood after a Lifetime of Visiting

There's something magical about winter up on Mount Hood which always seems to stir my soul. Winter has long been one of my favorite seasons, and Mount Hood one of my favorite locations. I've been visiting Mount Hood since I was single digits in age. Back then my parents would bring me up here, and I remember sledding on the hill behind Mazama Lodge near Government Camp. A lifetime later I still frequent Mount Hood, except now I bring my wife and son up here with me on my wondrous winter adventures.

This evening was absolutely amazing. I put on my snowshoes and winter gear, grabbed my camera bag and tripod and headed up the White River Snowfield towards Mount Hood. A mile or so up the canyon, I found what I was looking for as the white river sliced through the snowfield while Mount Hood rose above. A coat of snow covered the pine and fir trees above the snowfield in White River Canyon, as a golden color clung to the trees at the edge of the slopes, and as soon as I laid eyes on it I knew this was exactly where I wanted to set my camera up.

A gorgeous winter coat of snow blanketed White River Canyon and Mount Hood as it rose above the White River, and just as sunset passed the glorious alpenglow light started to bathe the slopes of the mountain in magnificent, magical light. Decades of coming here has taught me soft pastel hues and alpenglow often spring to life on the slopes of Mount Hood as sunset passes, and this evening was no different. As that magical alpenglow light bathed Mount Hood and the skies above, I felt as if I'd been transported into a glorious winter wonderland set up in the mountains of Heaven.

Time always seems to stand still up on Mount Hood, especially in the winter when that cold mountain air breathes life into my soul while nature puts on a display unveiling the full grandeur of winter in all its glory. It's a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and after a lifetime of coming here it still takes my breath away every time I lay eyes on it. There's something magical about winter's kiss on Mount Hood as alpenglow bathes the slopes above, and every time I return to this little slice of heaven high up in the Cascade Range I feel like I'm returning home to visit an old friend, and it always feels like Mount Hood is standing there, waiting to greet me the moment I return.
