Fade Away - Alpenglow and Moonset after Sunset above Mount Hood, Cloud Cap, and a Krummholz Tree

Cloud Cap, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow and Moonset after Sunset over Mount Hood and a Krummholz Subalpine Fir in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow illuminates the slopes of the Mount Hood and the surrounding subalpine forests below Cloud Cap as soft pastel hues glow in the skies above after sunset as dusk nears. A lone, twisted, gnarled krummholz subalpine fir grows at the edge of a high ridge above Cloud Cap Saddle just beyond large volcanic andesite boulders on the rugged northeast slopes of Mount Hood while the setting moon shines brightly in the skies above.

Cooper Spur juts out from the east side of Mount Hood as Barrett Spur juts out from north side of the mountain, while the Newton Clark Glacier, Eliot Glacier, Langille Glacier, and Coe Glacier blanket the northeast and north face of Mount Hood with snow and ice. Alpenglow illuminates Coe Glacier, Cooper Spur, and Barrett Spur as the scar from the 2008 Gnarl Ridge Fire dominates the ridge above Eliot Branch Canyon. Mount Hood rises high above Cloud Cap Saddle as the day draws to a close.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures alpenglow after sunset on Mount Hood above Cloud Cap and the Mount Hood National Forest as a twisted krummholz tree grows behind large andesite boulders. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of Alpenglow and Moonset on Mount Hood and Cloud Cap after Sunset

There's something about alpenglow and those soft pastel colors which stirs the soul. Alpenglow and the soft pastels of sunset seemingly hang on forever up in the mountains, something which has always been one of my favorite sights. This evening, the setting moon caught my eye as alpenglow bathed the slopes of Mount Hood and the pastel colors illuminated the skies above with a soft glow.

A lone, twisted, gnarled krummholz subalpine fir grew just beyond the large andesite volcanic boulders which line the ridge high above Cloud Cap Saddle. The rocks took on a warm reddish and orange glow as the soft light bathed the landscape in glorious hues. There was a cold chill in the air, something I always enjoy up on Mount Hood. The magical sight of alpenglow on Mount Hood combined with cold mountain air always seems to make time stand still.

Alpenglow hung on as the moon faded away towards the horizon, creating a wondrous palette of colors and tones on Mount Hood and the Mount Hood National Forest below. Moments like this always feel like I'm in a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth. The warm glow on the slopes of the mountain and the andesite boulders lining Cloud Cap was truly breathtaking, but it was that twisted krummholz tree which really pulled the whole scene together for me.

I couldn't help but wonder what kinds of things it must have witnessed high up on the slopes of Mount Hood, year after year, season after season. The mountains are a fantastic place. I've spent my entire life visiting Mount Hood, and perhaps that's why whenever I return to Mount Hood to take in all its majesty and grandeur, it feels like I've returned home.
