Wildflowers (Ice Plant) at Sunset over Seal Rock, Bird Rock, and the Pacific Ocean at Pebble Beach on the California Coast
A patch of wildflowers blooms at sunset along the Pacific coastline of central California on the Monterey Peninsula north of Big Sur as the clouds illuminate with color. The green and red wildflowers with hints of white, purple and pink are actually a flowering Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis), which were introduced in the early 1900s to California to stabilize the soil along highways and railroad tracks. Today, it's considered an aggressive coastal invader across California due to the fact they form dense mats (as seen in this photo) which can displace native species and alter the chemistry of the soil, though many people still refer to it as "wildflowers" in the spring when they are in bloom.
Out in the Pacific Ocean beyond the flowering Ice Plant and granite rocks at Seal Rock Creek Beach at Pebble Beach, Seal Rock (visible on the left) and Bird Rock (visible on the right) rise out of the turquoise waters of the Pacific, as the water in the distance towards the horizon reflects the faint yellow-orange hue of sunset. Just beyond, a dark blue band of water marks where the Pacific continental shelf drops off dramatically at the edge of the Monterey Canyon system, one of the deepest submarine canyons on the West Coast, plunging thousands of feet just miles offshore. The California Coast on this section of 17 Mile Drive accessed from California Highway 1 (commonly referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway) features rugged, granite cliffs and rock formations which are able to withstand the heavy pounding of the Pacific Ocean surf.
The mix of colors in the water, transitioning from the turquoise close up to the dark blue band offshore in the distance is stunning. It combines with leading lines of the rocky outcrops leading down to the turquoise water with the rugged underwater canyon this place is known for. Witnessing it on any scale at all is a thing of beauty, especially with Seal Rock and Bird Rock anchoring the scene just offshore. Even though Ice Plant is technically an invasive coastal plant, seeing the beautiful flowering colors it produces against the warm granite rocks and cool turquoise water is beautiful, especially when the soft colors of sunset illuminate the clouds above like they do here. The famed California Coast along the Monterey Peninsula is well known for good reason. It's rugged Pacific Coastline mixed with beautiful waters, which is always a magnificent sight.
