When the Sun Whispers Goodbye - Sunset over Point Lobos, the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur Coastline
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Big Sur, California
Sunset over the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Big Sur Coastline South of Carmel-by-the-Sea at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California
The sun dips below the horizon at sunset as waves from the Pacific Ocean crash onto the rocks near the rugged coastline of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Point Lobos is widely considered the northern gateway to the Big Sur Coast, and serves as the starting point for the scenic drive through the Big Sur Coastline in California.
The rocky beaches here are beautiful and rugged, yet serene in their own manner, which is vintage Big Sur. As the waves rolled ashore flowing around the rocks lining the coast here, the sun kissed the horizon. The bottom half of the sun has already set, with the remaining top half showing a brilliant ray of orange and red light illuminating out from it in a shallow V-shape. The clouds above are lit vibrant shades of orange and yellow, a magnificent contrast to the blue ocean and rocky shoreline below. It's easy to see why Point Lobos is the northern gateway to the Big Sur Coastline. It's classic Big Sur, but it's the low slung rocky coastline here compared to the high cliffs and headlands further south on the Pacific Coast Highway (California Highway 1) which makes its truly unique.
Point Lobos is one of only a few places on Earth where the Monterey Cypress is found, the others being Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula and areas further south along the Big Sur coastline, such as the pathway which leads to Pfeiffer Beach. Point Lobos features an underrated, truly Lone Cypress which is underrated, arguably more beautiful than the Pebble Beach icon and far less crowded.

Note on Provenance - Sunset over Point Lobos and Big Sur
This photo uses 6 manually bracketed images to overcome the extreme dynamic range between the shadows in the foreground and the highlights in the sky. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. As always, no sky swaps or generative AI is ever used in my work.
