A full temperature inversion (also known as a full thermal inversion and a total cloud inversion) creates a rare sight as clouds and fog fill the Grand Canyon from Mather Point while storm clouds line the skies high above. It is an incredibly rare sight to witness the canyon completely filled with clouds and fog, as it typically occurs only once every several years according to the National Weather Service. Partial inversions occur a few times per year, usually in the winter. Total inversions are much rarer.
A Full Temperature Inversion: The Unicorn of the Grand Canyon
A full temperature inversion at the Grand Canyon is incredibly rare, with these total cloud inversions occurring only once every few years at best. I've been visiting the Grand Canyon consistently for well over a decade, and for as long I had been visiting I'd been hoping to see one, with no luck. This day started like many other late November days on the South Rim: It had been cold during the morning, lasting into the day. But this day, the day started with cold weather hovering hovering near freezing and storms. As late afternoon arrived temperatures began to rapidly warm on the rim towards the low 50s. Hope springs eternal, and knowing how thermal inversions form I knew these conditions seemed favorable. So I left my camera bag and tripod with my wife and son and quickly ran over to the canyon rim to see what was going on. There it was. I went running back, screaming "there's a full thermal inversion in the canyon right now!" as I got near them. I grabbed my camera bag and tripod, and sprinted back in to the rim in one of the fastest sprints I've ever done. I would not miss this.
I ran down the canyon rim, and as I arrived I saw to people look at the rim, say "it's nothing but clouds, you can't see a thing" and leave. My first thought was they had no idea how rare this was to see! But I sure did. I quickly scanned for a composition I wanted. Near Mather Point, I saw some pillars rising up out of the sea of clouds with the south rim behind it in the distance. I knew I had my composition, and I knew temperature inversions can clear up just as quickly as they form so I needed to be quick. I quickly set my bag down, grabbed my camera and tripod and set it up. Less than 1 second later, there it was: my unicorn of the Grand Canyon.
I was excited beyond belief. It's such an ethereal thing to witness. I don't quite know how long it was, as time stood still and the moment lasted forever. I took it all in, and kept taking photos. I have a friend who used to be a ranger at the Grand Canyon, and during his entire career he never saw a total cloud inversion here, yet here I was. I quickly snapped a picture of the back of my camera and sent it to him as soon as I had signal. It was a moment I will never forget. The Grand Canyon has always been one of my favorite places, as it’s so vast and there are so many spots off the beaten path on both rims to explore if you train for it, especially in the inner canyon. But a full temperature inversion filling this place? That's seemingly impossible to catch, like a unicorn. It was something I had always dreamed of seeing, and the moment it finally happened is something that will always stick with me.
I've seen and photographed a full temperature inversion here more times sense this day, even photographing cloud inversions against a snow covered Grand Canyon on many occasions. But there's something about finally seeing your unicorn for the first time you'll never forgot, and this is one experience that will always stick with me.
What is a Grand Canyon Temperature Inversion?
A temperature inversion, also known as a cloud inversion and thermal inversion, occurs when cold, dense air becomes trapped at the bottom of the canyon beneath a layer of warmer air above. This creates a sea of clouds which completely fills the canyon, creating a rare, ethereal sight. Cloud Inversions at the Grand Canyon usually occur in the late fall and winter.
What Causes a Temperature Inversion?
When cold air fills the canyon, the air above can warm at a more rapid pace. This creates clouds and fog in the colder, denser air filling the canyon. This colder air becomes trapped by the warmer air above as it creates a lid trapping the cold, dense air. This creates an inverted temperature and thermal gradient.
Normally, the Earth's atmosphere is heated from below, with the warmer layers near the ground. With a temperature inversion, the opposite happens and this thermal gradient is flipped. When a warmer layer of air moves over a colder, denser layer of air a temperature inversion occurs. When this happens in places like the Grand Canyon, it causes a partial or total cloud inversion which fills the canyon below with a layer of clouds.
I've had good luck with temperature inversions at the Grand Canyon, and they can occur in the colder seasons when a storm begins to break. During a storm, cold air fills the canyon below and the air above. Once the storm begins to break, the air above begins to warm up but the colder, dense air from the storm remains trapped in the canyon by the canyon walls below. This causes fog and clouds to form, which fills the canyon with a layer of clouds known as a cloud inversion. The warmer air above acts as a lid, trapping the colder air for a period of time until equilibrium begins to occur, at which point the cloud inversion will begin to break and the temperature inversion will begin to flip back to normal.
This can occur at places other than the Grand Canyon as well. I have photographed it on several occasions from the ridges surrounding Mount Saint Helens. Although the location may be different, the causes are the same.
