In a spot nicknamed The Lone Cypress, two Cypress trees actually sit perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean

Twin Cypress - Sunset over the Lone Cypress, Pacific Ocean and Carmel Bay, Pebble Beach, California

Midway Point, 17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, Monterey Peninsula, California

Sunset Colors Reflecting on the Pacific Ocean and Carmel Bay Below the Lone Cypress  and its Companion Cypress at Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula

A faint orange glow from the setting sun reflects off the surface of the Pacific Ocean and Carmel Bay below the Lone Cypress and its companion Cypress tree as the warm colors of sunset paint the clouds above in brilliant shades of orange, red and gold.

Despite the famous nickname of this spot as "The Lone Cypress," the name is actually a misnomer. Two Cypress trees actually sit perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean here at Midway Point, so it's not truly a lone cypress perched atop the cliffs and headlands. There is an actual, truly lone Monterey Cypress at Point Lobos I refer to as The Lonely Cypress, as it truly sits alone atop the headlands rising out of the Pacific Ocean with no companion around it to keep it company.

Across Carmel Bay, the sandy beach at Carmel Beach is visible along the shoreline just below Carmel Point with the headlands of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve rising in the distance beyond it, the same Point Lobos that is home to an actual lone Monterey Cypress with no companion to keep it company, as mentioned above. Doud Peak and the mountains of Garrapata State Park at the northern end of Big Sur rises up 1,977 feet above Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean in the distance, providing a beautiful visual scale as to just how grand the view from here really is.

Too many people focus on only the famous tree, choosing to forgo all the landscape features which make this place unique. This photograph itself has become unique as time had passed. It was taken before the famous Lone Cypress lost its biggest branch on February 14, 2019 preserving both the Lone Cypress tree and its companion Cypress tree in a more complete form before the branches snapped, creating a historical record of these iconic trees as they stood for generations along the rugged Monterey Peninsula coastline.

Monterey Cypress Trees- What Makes Them Unique to the Central California Coast and Big Sur?

Monterey Cypress trees are a glacial relict, and were forced to retreat during the last ice age to areas with climates which made it possible for them to survive. This makes the Monterey Cypress one of the rarest trees on Earth, as it's native to only the Central California Coast along the Monterey Peninsula, Point Lobos and Big Sur. These trees are mostly known for growing at Point Lobos and the Monterey Peninsula, though Monterey Cypress trees are also found in other small pockets on the California Central Coast like this pathway leading to Pfeiffer Beach and Keyhole Arch at Big Sur.
