A negative tide (also known as a minus tide) during low tide in the Pacific Ocean at sunset exposes tide pools. California Mussels (Mytilus californianus) and Goose Barnacles (Pollicipes polymerus) cover the exposed rocks in the foreground as they lie covered with seaweed, with tide pools forming between the mussel beds around Greyhound Rock along the Pacific Coast of California in Santa Cruz County. The warm glow of sunset illuminates the horizon above the Pacific Ocean as the golden light of the setting sun reflects off the ocean water near the far edge of the tide pools below California's famed California Highway 1 (CA-1), commonly referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) though the official designation here is the Cabrillo Highway.
Greyhound Rock is composed of Santa Cruz Mudstone, sedimentary rock formation which defines many of the dramatic formations and sea stacks on this stretch of the northern Santa Cruz County coastline, including nearby Pelican Rock. This area is a rough, rugged coastline filled with a sorts of unique beauty, something that fits in perfectly on the California Coast and the Pacific Coast as a whole.

This photo uses 3 manually bracketed images to overcome the extreme dynamic range between the shadows in the foreground and the highlights in the sky. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. As always, no sky swaps or generative AI is ever used in my work.
