The Long Goodbye - Mount Hood Winter Alpenglow and the White River after Sunset

Alpenglow illuminates Mount Hood and the clouds in the sky above long after sunset and dusk as nautical twilight sets in. The glacial White River meanders through a frozen blanket of snow and ice in the White River Snowfield while alpenglow sets fire to the slopes and glaciers of Mount Hood, reflecting off the clouds and illuminating the water of the White River. Snow blankets the pine and fir trees of the Mount Hood National Forest on the ridges surrounding White River Canyon, as fog blankets the upper reaches of the forest near the mountain.
The White River's headwaters are up near the bottom of the White River Glacier, which is lit up with alpenglow along with the Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield). Magenta alpenglow bathes the clouds above as lights from Mount Hood Meadows ski area on the other side of the eastern ridge of White River Canyon catch the clouds, illuminating them with a warm glow resembling sunset. Seeing the alpenglow colors in the sky and on Mount Hood is a perfect example of true indirect alpenglow. Those warm colors against the cold snow blanketing the trees and the White River Snowfield was a beautiful contrast. I've been visiting Mount Hood my entire life, and winter scenes like this are why I'll always find my way back here.

Indirect Alpenglow on Mount Hood in the Winter: A Love Letter from the Mountain
Indirect alpenglow has long been one of my favorite sights in the mountains. The soft, indirect light can last long after sunset, and that's exactly what happened here. The alpenglow this evening started at sunset and never left. The alpenglow hit its most intense color 38 minutes after sunset during the early stages of nautical twilight, when it lit up the White River Glacier and Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield) in a vibrant magenta glow, reflecting off the clouds in the sky above and the water of the White River below.
Rayleigh scattering in the winter months creates some of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen, and the colors often times last long after sunset and into the twilight and nautical twilight that follows. The best alpenglow on Mount Hood from this side of the mountain often occurs in the winter, when the low angle of the sun and its direction in the sky allows that indirect light after sunset to illuminate the sky and slopes of the mountain as backscattering brings the colors to life in all their grandeur.
It's a magical sight to see the color appear at sunset and never leave. I've been coming up to Mount Hood since I was barely old enough to walk, when my parents would take me up to Mount Hood. I'd often do sledding on the hill behind Mazama Lodge as I grew up, and those wondrous alpenglow colors on Mount Hood in the winter always captivated me. Over 40 years later, they still do. There's something magical about winter alpenglow in the mountains, when the warm magenta colors bathe the snow covered slopes and landscape in that ethereal light.
Mount Hood was one of my first loves as a child, and a lifetime later it's still a place I hold near and dear. That alpenglow light has always brought me back to Mount Hood. It feels like a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and it's a place which always seems to soothe the soul. Winter is by far my favorite season on Mount Hood, and that magical alpenglow light always feels like a gift from heaven, courtesy of a love letter wrapped in warm alpenglow from Mount Hood.
