Just a Glimpse - Winter Mount Hood Sunset and the White River Snowfield
White River, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Sunset over Mount Hood, the White River and the White River Snowfield in the Winter, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Mount Hood, the White River Glacier and the lower part of the Palmer Glacier (Palmer Snowfield) peek through winter clouds at sunset, as the glacial White River flows down from the White River Glacier on the mountain above. The river carves a channel through large boulders lining the snow and ice field as it makes its way down the mountain, while firs, pines and other trees in the Mount Hood National Forest grow at the edge of White River Canyon and the eastern ridge rising above it.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Winter Sunset with faint alpenglow over Mount Hood, the White River Glacier and the White River Snowfield. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
In the Snowfields of Heaven: The Magic of Winter on Mount Hood and the White River Snowfield
The way the clouds formed around Mount Hood while the upper slopes and summit peeked through a hole in the clouds was absolutely magical. The clouds caught faint magenta and purple hues, as the White River Glacier, Palmer Glacier and upper slopes illuminated with soft, faint alpenglow as they stood enveloped by cloud cover lit with soft, faint alpenglow.
The White River Snowfield is lined with large boulders and rocks, and the sections where the river cuts its channel through here usually lie bare in the winter, showing the rocks along the shore of the river while thick snow and ice blankets the rest of the snowfield. The snowfield itself occurs in the White River's floodplain below the foot of the glacier, and as a result the river's path through here tends to change with each major flood as rocks and debris washed down past the glacier's terminal moraine block its path, causing the river's channel to shift.
In the winter though, it's always a magical sight regardless of where the river cuts its way through the snowfield. I particularly like the trees lining the edge of White River Canyon at the edge of the snowfield, as these ones took on a greenish-yellow hue compared to the deep green fir and pines lining the eastern slopes of the canyon above. It was an absolutely magnificent sight, especially against soft alpenglow colors on Mount Hood and the clouds above set against the deep snow and glacial silt filled waters of the White River and the White River Snowfield.
As a young child, I would often come up to Mount Hood with my Mom, Dad and a close family friend to sled, and over 40 years later I still head up here every winter, except this time I'm snowshoeing across the winter landscape with crampons, camera gear and a tripod on my back. Winter has long been my favorite season. It was my favorite season as a kid, and 4 decades later it still is. There's something magical about time spent in the mountains in the winter. Mount Hood was my first love as a kid growing up in Oregon, and it's still among my most loved places in nature a lifetime later. No matter how many times I've been to Mount Hood in the winter, it never gets old. It always feels like winter in heaven, and perhaps that's why I'm still drawn here well over 40 years later.
