Winter Snow and Strom Clouds Above Pipe Creek Vista, Mather Point, the Grand Canyon, and the South Rim in Grand Canyon National Park
Storm clouds during the sunrise golden hour darken the skies above the Grand Canyon at Pipe Creek Vista as both the South Rim and North Rim lay covered in snow. Pipe Creek winds its way through the inner canyon below, towards its junction with the Colorado River in Upper Granite Gorge at Pipe Creek Beach. Cheops Pyramid, Isis Temple and Shiva Temple rise up from the inner canyon above Upper Granite Gorge, while Pipe Creek Canyon lies framed by O'Neill Butte to the east and the golden cliffs of Mather Point to the west.
Mather Point sits atop the Kaibab Limestone, rising up above the Toroweap Formation, Coconino Sandstone, Hermit Formation and Supai Group lining the walls of Pipe Creek Canyon, Deep in the inner canyon, Brahma Schist up to 1.76 billion years old and Vishnu Schist Basement Rock up to 1.8 billion years old are visible on the walls of Granite Gorge, which consists of Vishnu Schist (a metamorphic rock) intruded by pinkish Zoroaster Granite (an igneous rock).
Cheops Pyramid, rising up 5,401 feet from the inner canyon, marks the spot where the dark storm clouds begin to shift from the cold shadows covering the northern sections inner canyon and the north rim towards the warmer light enveloping the South Rim. Far across the canyon, Shiva Temple and The Colonnade lie in dark shadows, as the winter storm blankets Point Sublime, Crystal Canyon and Tiyo Point on the North Rim with snow. Bright Angel Point and Widforss Point far across the canyon lie covered in a blanket of white snow, as both rises above Buddha Temple and the inner canyon below.
A slight, golden light shows through the clouds on the horizon to the west, as warm tones blanket the clouds to the east, a beautiful mix of colors against the dark, foreboding storm clouds stretching far across the canyon in the distance. The mix of warm tones on the South Rim and the Toroweap Formation against the cold shadows on the North Rim creates a wonderful contrast mirroring the clouds in the sky, showcasing how winter storms in the Grand Canyon can reveal a mix of wondrous, contrasting light across the vast distances of the canyon.
