Total Cloud Inversion during a Winter Snow Storm in the Grand Canyon below Mather Point in Grand Canyon National Park
A temperature inversion (also known as a thermal inversion and cloud inversion) during a winter snowstorm covers the Grand Canyon in clouds and fog as a lone tower formation of Mather Point rises up out of the clouds below Mather Point. Snow falls across the Grand Canyon, creating streaks of white across the formations below Mather Point as it comes down hard and fast.
The golden brown color of the towers of Mather Point rising up from the total cloud inversion are Kaibab Limestone, which has been heavily weathered by water and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. This allowed the large vertical towers and blocks to form over time as weathering eroded Kaibab Limestone. When combined with the total cloud inversion blanketing the Grand Canyon, this transforms the towers of this world famous landmark into something ethereal and entirely new. As the full temperature inversion filled and engulfed the canyon, the Kaibab Limestone towers at Mather Point appear to rise up as an isolated rocky point, transforming a familiar formation and rock outcropping into what looks like a mysterious, free floating monolithic tower rising up out of an endless void.
Extreme weather such as a snowstorm and full thermal inversion has the ability to strip away context we normally use to identify a scene. When you're willing to look for the hidden beauty that lays in front of you, you're greeted by a majestic scene such as thing that transforms a well known formation into something straight out of a winter fairytale.
Hidden Beauty of Nature: a Full Temperature Inversion below the Grand Canyon during a Snowstorm
When people think of the Grand Canyon, cold weather, a snowstorm and a full thermal inversion which shrouds the landscape in a layer of pure white is not what comes to mind. It might not be common or expected, but it's a truly beautiful sight. I often find the most beautiful sights in nature are the unexpected ones. Going down just a bit below the top of the rim down into the cloud inversion, I was greeted with a lone formation rising up from the clouds of the full temperature inversion while snow fell all around in a flurry of white.
The few people I had seen earlier above the rim during the storm were ill-equipped, with one person having duct taped his Nike running shoes! He was slipping and sliding all over. I did not have that problem, as I was properly equipped for the weather having full winter gear on including winter boots with ice spikes for traction on the snow and ice covered rocks, as well as winter trekking poles. I ventured out onto a rocky promontory southwest of Mather Point, dropping below the rim to gain a unique perspective looking up at the tower formations of Mather Point from below as the storm raged around me.
The snow falling is visible in this photo as white streaks, a testament to how strong and fast the snow was coming down. It mixes with the cloud inversion to form a blank slate with one lone formation rising up out of the sea of white. It was an incredibly unique sight, and it's one many people will often just pass on by without a thought as it's not what they expected to see. The most beautiful sights in nature are often the unexpected, which we only see when we open our minds to the blank slate of beauty in nature which lies before us.
What is a Grand Canyon Temperature Inversion?
A temperature inversion, also known as a cloud inversion and thermal inversion, occurs when cold, dense air becomes trapped at the bottom of the canyon beneath a layer of warmer air above. This creates a sea of clouds which completely fills the canyon, creating a rare, ethereal sight.
What Causes a Temperature Inversion?
When cold air fills the canyon, the air above can warm at a more rapid pace. This creates clouds and fog in the colder, denser air filling the canyon. This colder air becomes trapped by the warmer air above as it creates a lid trapping the cold, dense air. This creates an inverted temperature and thermal gradient.
Normally, the Earth's atmosphere is heated from below, with the warmer layers near the ground. With a temperature inversion, the opposite happens and this thermal gradient is flipped. When a warmer layer of air moves over a colder, denser layer of air a temperature inversion occurs. When this happens in places like the Grand Canyon, it causes a partial or total cloud inversion which fills the canyon below with a layer of clouds.
I've had good luck with temperature inversions at the Grand Canyon, and they can occur in the colder seasons when a storm begins to break. During a storm, cold air fills the canyon below and the air above. Once the storm begins to break, the air above begins to warm up but the colder, dense air from the storm remains trapped in the canyon by the canyon walls below. This causes fog and clouds to form, which fills the canyon with a layer of clouds known as a cloud inversion. The warmer air above acts as a lid, trapping the colder air for a period of time until equilibrium begins to occur, at which point the cloud inversion will begin to break and the temperature inversion will begin to flip back to normal.
This can occur at places other than the Grand Canyon as well. I have photographed it on several occasions from the ridges surrounding Mount Saint Helens. Although the location may be different, the causes are the same.
