Civil Twilight Mirror Reflections on Benson Lake in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon
The soft blues of civil twilight set in as last colors of sunset faintly hang on in the clouds above Benson Lake. The trees along the shore and the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge high above reflect in the calm, clear waters of Benson Lake as the exceptionally clear water shows the rocks lining the bottom of the lake, gradually mixing with the soft blue reflections further away from the shore. The lake and the park itself are named for lumber baron and philanthropist Simon Benson who donated the land to the City of Portland in 1914. He is also the namesake of Benson Bridge at nearby Multnomah Falls. Benson funded the construction of Benson Bridge in 1914, and one year later in 1915 he donated the land Multnomah Falls itself and Multnomah Falls Lodge sits on. In 1915, he also funded the bridge at Wahkeena Falls. That same year, the city founded Benson Park. In 1939, the City of Portland donated the park to the United States Forest Service, who then transferred control of Benson Park to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (Oregon State Parks), when the name was changed to Benson State Recreation Area.
Benson Lake State Recreation Area is an underrated gem in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Almost everyone passes it by without a second thought, never stopping to take in its beauty even for a minute. There are some curved trees along the south shore of the lake which create some wonderful reflections in the water, especially as the cliffs of the Gorge rise above. 40 plus years visiting the Columbia River Gorge dating back to when I was a kid has taught me a few things, including the fact that the most beautiful sights the hallowed walls of this basalt cathedral are often the ones everyone else passes by without a second glance.
