Venus shines brightly as orange, yellow, soft magenta and soft purple colors illuminate the skies over the Pacific Ocean and Shark Fin Cove at Sunset. The namesake sea stack rises up out of the water like the fin of a giant shark turned to stone by Medusa from Greek Mythology, as tidepools line the rocky shelf in the foreground as the incoming tide crashes around it.
It's one of the most beautiful sights on the Santa Cruz County section of the Pacific Coast Highway and California Highway 1. It takes a scramble down a narrow trail which cuts below the headlands to reach this spot, but it's an absolutely beautiful place. If you're lucky enough to be here when it is relatively empty, it's a serene, isolated experience with that rugged California Coast feel to it. This photograph was taken from the tidal shelf at the base of the sea stack as high tide was approaching, a narrow window of access that disappears completely as the tide rolls in and it disappears underwater.

This photo uses 4 manually bracketed images to overcome the extreme dynamic range between the shadows in the foreground and the highlights in the sky. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. As always, no sky swaps or generative AI is ever used in my work.
