Storm Clouds at Sunset over Wildflowers Growing Between Rocks on Spanish Bay Beach along the Pacific Ocean on the California Coast
European Sea Rocket (Cakile maritima) wildflowers grow from the sand between the rounded granite rocks at Spanish Bay Beach as storm clouds form over the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean and Spanish Bay. Just north of the beginning of the famed Big Sur Coastline, the waters near Spanish Bay and Moss Beach just to the south have their own distinctive charm.
The large, rounded granite rocks here are beautiful, and seeing the purple four petal flowers of European Sea Rocket grow from the sand beneath the granite rocks as the turquoise waters of the ocean roll ashore is a wondrous sight. When the storm clouds thin just enough to allow the colors of sunset through, they take on a soft yellow hue. Here, thin clouds above show the soft yellow hues of sunset as dark, ominous storm clouds blanket the horizon. It's a beautiful sight to see so many unique elements come together: the turquoise water, the large rounded granite rocks, the wildflowers and the sunset storm clouds.
European Sea Rocket is actually an introduced invasive species from Europe, though it's invasive with relatively minor impacts. The European Sea Rocket that grows along the granite rocks at Spanish Bay is now common along California's coastal dunes, where it colonizes sandy and rocky shorelines as a pioneer plant. Still, seeing the beautiful purple colors mixed with the sand and the granite rocks was a truly beautiful sight. It's not often you see wildflowers growing from the sand on a beach, but when you do it's always worth a stop.

A 3-Image Focus Stack of 3 single exposure images all taken at back to back to back. All exposures were taken at the exact same settings, shifting focus each frame to ensure sharp, in-focus details from the closest patterns in the granite rocks to the ocean further away
Note on Provenance
This photo uses the focus stacking workflow of the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience to ensure a sharp depth of field throughout the frame. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. As always, no generative AI is ever used in my work.
