Last Kiss of Day - Dusk over Pigeon Point Lighthouse and Whaler's Cove, Pescadero, California
Pigeon Point Lighthouse, San Mateo County, California Coast
Dusk over Pigeon Point Lighthouse and Whaler's Cove, Pacific Coast Highway, California
Dusk sets in over Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Whaler's Cove and the Pacific Ocean. The last colors of sunset hang on behind the lighthouse and over the Pacific Ocean, as Civil Twilight comes to an end and Nautical Twilight begins. The blue shadow of Earth is visible on the horizon above the Pacific, blending in with the darker blue water of the ocean as a small, magenta band of light separates it from the warmer orange and yellow hues of sunset above.
Sunsets over the Pacific Ocean can last a long time, as the long line of sight to the horizon allows the colors to remain in the sky far longer than they would further inland. This is exactly where the term nautical twilight comes from; as the sunset glow on the horizon is strong enough sailors could still navigate the ocean waters visually without needing to navigate by stars like they must do at night.
Seeing the sunset colors hang on above Pigeon Point Lighthouse as it rises 115 feet above Pigeon Point is a beautiful sight. The warm glow of lights illuminate the tower of the lighthouse, the lighthouse keeper's residence (now used as the Pigeon Point Hostel), and the museum creates a wonderful complement to the orange and yellow sunset hues hanging on in the sky above the Pacific Ocean. There's a warm glow from the active light beacon atop the Pigeon Point Lighthouse, something that ties the entire scene together and produces a vintage, rugged California Coast feel.
Located just off California Highway 1 (commonly referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway) at Pigeon Point, this lighthouse is one of the most visually stunning lighthouses on the Pacific Coast Highway coastline. I've always had a thing for lighthouses, but seeing those beautiful sunset colors hang on while the lighthouse springs to life is something that will always keep me coming back.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse: The Sentinel of California State Route 1 and the Pacific Coast
Originally constructed in 1871, Pigeon Point Lighthouse has been guiding mariners since it first opened in 1872. At 115 feet tall, the lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses in North America, and it's tied with the Point Arena Lighthouse (also located off California State Route 1) as the tallest lighthouse on the Pacific Coast (the West Coast of the United States). Remarkably, both of the tallest lighthouses on the Pacific Coast, Pigeon Point and Point Arena, are located along the same stretch of California State Route 1, making California Highway 1 home to an extraordinary concentration of historic lighthouse architecture that can rival the celebrated lighthouses along the famed Oregon Coast. The lighthouse is still an active navigation aid for the US Coast Guard, and the light was automated in 1974. Its iconic white masonry tower closely resembles lighthouses typically found along the New England coastline. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is not just beautifully constructed and visually iconic, it's also historic, having been designated a California Historical Landmark and having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This photograph was captured on December 16, 2017, preserving Pigeon Point Lighthouse with its active beacon illuminated, a historical record predating the $16 million restoration project that began in January 2024. The lighthouse light beacon should become active again once the restoration is complete (estimated to be in 2027), as this is considered an active, working lighthouse.
Days End over a Legendary Lighthouse
Being a lifelong Oregonian who grew up spending time on the coast, I've spent a lot of time viewing the large selection of lighthouses up and down the Pacific Coast. My favorite in Oregon has long been Yaquina Head Lighthouse (which is the 5th tallest lighthouse on the west coast). It's my ideal, classic lighthouse design visually. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is a taller version of this magnificent structure. It's exactly what I've envisioned a lighthouse should look like, dating back to when I was a little kid running along the beaches below Yaquina Head.
The view looking out over Whaler's Cove at Pigeon Point Lighthouse as the last colors of sunset valiantly hang on above the Pacific Ocean is simply magical. It's a scene from yesteryear, watching a throwback to a simpler time as the timeless colors of sunset do what they've been doing for millennia over the ocean: hang on forever and refuse to let go.
I've long felt the wondrous colors of sunrise and sunset are those brief few moments where time stands still, and it's scenes like this that first made me feel this way back when I was a little kid. Witnessing the blue hues of dusk set in while the warm tones of sunset continue to bathe the horizon in enchanting light is a sight I'll always cherish. It's the last kiss of day from the Pacific Ocean as it gives you one last goodnight before it heads off to sleep. Watching that transition as one of the Pacific Coast's legendary lighthouses rises up in the foreground is something I'll never forget. When time stands still, the scene burns into your memories, and if I close my eyes today I can still feel the cool breeze of the Pacific as it brushes across my face, like one last kiss before it says goodbye for the night.

Technical Note - Overcoming Extreme Dynamic Range at Dusk
To overcome the extreme dynamic range of the vibrant colors and deep shadows against the lighthouse and the foreground, two successive exposures were utilized. Two successive exposures overcome the extreme dynamic range between the vibrant twilight colors and the deep shadows of the lighthouse, preserving museum-grade tonal accuracy across the entire frame.
Note on Provenance
Captured using a manually bracketed exposure sequence and created via a layered RAW workflow, this work reflects the dedication to data integrity championed by the "Mead Method."
