Ice Box - Ice at Wahkeena Falls during a Winter Sunset, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Ice, Snow and Icicles on the Basalt Cliffs Surrounding Wahkeena Falls in the Winter at Sunset in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon

Winter snow and ice cling to the basalt cliffs surrounding Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia River Gorge during a cold spell, as the waterfall gracefully tumbles 242 feet over the basalt cliffs and down into the icebox canyon below. Wahkeena Falls is a tiered horsetail waterfall named after the Yakama word for "most beautiful," and it's easy to see why. Its upper sections cut through a narrow channel in the basalt in a shape reminiscent of a necktie, while its lower sections flow out in the shape of a fan.

It's a stunning sight, especially when the plants, landscape and basalt cliffs surrounding it are all covered in ice as the waterfall gracefully flows down through the narrow basalt canyon above. Ice balls and icicles form at the base of where the waterfall fans out and cascades down over the rocky streambed below, while icicles and snow frozen solid from the 10 degree Fahrenheit temperatures (-12 degrees Celsius) cover the plant life and the basalt cliffs above, the perfect contrast against the soft purple tones of sunset in the winter sky.

I had to strap spikes to my winter boots and use winter trekking poles to make the trek up the trail to this view, as a sheet of ice and snow blanketed most of the trail and the bridge at the Wahkeena Falls. Simon Benson, the namesake of nearby Benson Lake, funded the bridge in 1915, something I was certainly thankful for this day. The bridge itself was a pure sheet of ice, and was only possible thanks to the ice spikes on my boots and ice spikes I replaced my tripod feet with.

The results were worth it though. I've lived 45 minutes from here my entire life, and I grew up visiting this place with my Mom and Dad back as far as I can remember. I've spent over 40 years visiting this spot in the Columbia River Gorge, and after 4 decades its beauty still takes my breath away. Seeing this moment when Wahkeena Falls transformed into magical winter wonderland of snow and ice is something I'll never forget. It looked like a waterfall flowing through an icebox canyon, and all I could think about how perfectly the Yakama word for "most beautiful" described what I was witnessing. In a waterfall corridor filled with beautiful waterfalls, Wahkeena Falls is certainly worthy of the name "most beautiful."
