The Hunter's Moon glows golden yellow as it rises over Merriam Point, Mountain Hemlock trees, Crater Lake and the caldera East Rim at dusk

Hunter's Watch - Hunter's Moon Full Moonrise over Crater Lake, Merriam Point and the Caldera Rim

Merriam Point, West Rim, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Full Moonrise over Crater Lake as the Hunter's Moon Rises above Merriam Point, Whitebark Pines and the Caldera East Rim Across the Deep Blue Water

The Hunter's Moon, the first Full Moon following the Harvest Moon, rises over Crater Lake and the east caldera walls and rim at dusk from the west rim of Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. In the foreground, the slopes of the West Rim below Merriam Point angle down towards the deep blue water of Crater Lake at a sharp 45-degree angle as the full moon rises over the Rugged Crest of the Palisades and the Wineglass on the East Rim in the distance.

The Wineglass is a scree chute formation on the northern caldera rim first described in an 1897 National Geographic article as resembling 'an enormous stemmed glass' when viewed from across the lake. The Rugged Crest refers to the jagged dacite lava crags at the caldera rim above Cleetwood Cove, named in geologist Howell Williams' landmark 1942 geological study of Crater Lake.

A faint magenta alpenglow still lingers in the dusk sky, showing faint hues of color. The full moon glows yellow and gold in the evening sky above the Crater Lake caldera rim, as clouds passing in front of the moon catch a magenta glow, creating a soft glow surrounding the moon. Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) and Mountain Hemlock trees (Tsuga mertensiana) grow on the slopes and rim of the caldera, as the deep blue waters of Crater Lake show a beautiful contrast against the warm colors of the caldera, the green of the trees and the moon in the sky above.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the rising Hunter's Moon over Crater Lake from the southern edge of Merriam Point as the stunning orange glow of the full moon rises against soft sunset pastel colors in the clouds above. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Crater Lake National Park, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Hunter's Moon Full Moonrise over Crater Lake: Beauty above the Caldera

Sometimes photos are carefully planned, other times you simply photograph the beauty in front of you. This photo was the latter, quite literally a quick pivot from what I was doing. I was photographing sunset the other direction and lost track of time. I saw the glorious color of moon rising behind me from the corner of my eye. I had my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II on my 5D MKIII and didn't have time to run and get my Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L glass and put it on my camera, so I quickly sized up the scene and ran to my newly chosen location with my camera, lens and tripod. I have always loved how the slopes of the caldera lead sharply down towards the deep blue waters of the Crater Lake at Merriam Point when viewed a little south of it along the West Rim.

The Whitebark Pine and Mountain Hemlock trees at the top of the rim give a wonderful reference to just how steep the slope really is as you look across the rim. I had to move fast to compose the photo. The Hunter's Moon rose at 6:57pm on October 13, 2019 just 25 minutes after sunset, rising above the East Rim between Rugged Crest of the Palisades and the Wineglass. There was a faint alpenglow in the clouds in the sky, as the fading colors hung on as soft pastels while the Blue Hour set in. The clouds around the rising full Moon caught a faint magenta glow from the setting sun, which perfectly aligned with a small group of trees partway down the slope below Merriam Point as the glowing golden moon kissed the horizon just 0.1 degrees above the horizon.

The entire thought process played out in my head within a matter of seconds. I quickly ran to my chosen spot, composed the scene, dialed in my settings and took the photo. Things always slow down in moments like this, and those precious few seconds never really seem like that short of a timeframe. That's one of my favorite things about nature: it's easy to get lost in its beauty, and time slows down as you enjoy the moment while time seems to stand still.
