This Garnet Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum aff. 'Garnet') grows along the banks of Lower Pond like a silent sentinel, just across the water from iconic Zig-Zag Bridge. It rises above the banks of the Pond while Zig-Zag Bridge peaks through between the branches. Rich, vibrant green Pacific Northwest moss grows on its twisted, contorted, serpentine trunk and branches as the deep orange and red peak fall colors Garnet Laceleaf Japanese Maples are known for spring to life like flames above Lower Pond.
Fallen laceleaf leaves from the tree cover the green shrubs below, as ferns grow along the shore of the Pond behind it. This tree has a beautiful canopy, with the brilliant red and orange colors crown its twisted, moss-covered branches and trunk like a hat. This often overlooked tree at the threshold of the Lower Strolling Pond Garden puts on one of the most structurally dramatic displays in the entire park.
Having explored the paths of the Portland Japanese Garden for over four decades, I've always found that this specific Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple tree perfectly illustrates the unique seasonal mechanics of the garden's historic red cultivars. The way the deep, dark burgundy canopy transforms to a spectacular canopy of orange and crimson is a thing of beauty to witness. Often, when the third week of October arrives the direct sun exposure over the open pond breaks down the surface pigments on the leaves, transforming the outer leaves into a spectacular cascade of burnt-orange, rust, and glowing fiery crimson. Meanwhile, the heavily shaded interior foliage retains its deep, stubborn maroon tones.
Utilizing a low perspective and depth of field compression allowed me to isolates the beautiful s-curves of the moss covered trunk against the geometric leading lines of the Zig-Zag Bridge in the background. The waters of Lower Pond peek through under the bridge, creating a peaceful, meditative autumn scene in one of Oregon's finest locations. It's a wondrous mix of colors and shapes, a perfect yet underrated scene in Portland's world-famous Portland Japanese Garden.
