Glimmering Waters - Crater Lake Aurora Borealis and Milky Way Spiral Arm over Wizard Island
Discovery Point, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
The Aurora Borealis, Milky Way Spiral Arm and Andromeda Galaxy over Wizard Island, Llao Rock, Crater Lake, and Fumarole Bay in Crater Lake National Park
The magentas and greens of the Aurora Borealis light up the skies above Crater Lake, Wizard Island, Llao Rock and Discovery Point during a massive low-latitude diffuse aurora during the legendary June 2015 G4 rated geomagnetic storm. The Milky Way spiral arm rises into the night skies above, as the Andromeda Galaxy shines amongst the stars. The greens of the aurora reflect in the waters of Crater Lake just east of Wizard Island, while the magenta aurora colors reflect off the waters of Fumarole Bay, Governors Bay and the water of Crater Lake surrounding Wizard Island during an intense display of color despite a positive BZ level.
The geomagnetic storm produced a mid-latitude auroral blanket with equatorward expansion, which covered the skies in color even when the BZ level waned. The BZ is the measurement of the interplanetary magnetic fields direction that drives aurora intensity, with a negative (southward) direction being ideal since it pulls the aurora down closer to the mid latitudes and equator. During a severe G-rated storm, this makes pillars and dancing more likely, while a positive BZ will generally produce an intense auroral display of color during a severe storm even in the absence of pillars, as seen here.
Merriam Point on the West Rim and Llao Rock rise up across the lake on the northwest rim, as Llao Rock 3.8 miles away reflects in the waters of Llao Bay. Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) and Mountain Hemlock trees (Tsuga mertensiana) grow on the steep slopes of the caldera below Discovery Point, as Llao Rock, the northwest rim and the north rim of the caldera glow as the intense green color from the aurora blanket above creates a green glow on the caldera walls below.
It's a wonderful display of color in a place with some of the darkest skies in Oregon. Crater Lake's skies Bortle Class 1 dark sky rated, which is the darkest sky rating on the Bortle scale. Seeing the diffuse aurora and the Milky Way spiral arm rise up above Oregon's only National Park as the colors of the aurora blanketed the sky was a magnificent sight to see. The beauty of Crater Lake is unmatched, and that's one of the reasons I've spent a lifetime visiting this sacred place.
