Gates of Heaven - Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial at Sunset in the Columbia River Gorge, Washington

Maryhill Stonehenge, Columbia River Gorge, Maryhill, Washington

Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial at Sunset Looking Through the Pillars at the Columbia River Gorge in Maryhill, Washington

Looking through the stone pillars of Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial at the Columbia River and hills of the Columbia River Gorge, sunset bathes the sky in soft orange and yellow light, as a warm glow shines between the pillars of Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial while reflecting the soft glow onto the underside of its stone pillars. Sunset light bathes the hills of the Columbia River Gorge in a soft, golden hue as windmills line the top of the cliffs above.

The altar stone at Maryhill Stonehenge is aligned for sunrise on the summer solstice, though unlike ancient Stonehenge this replica is aligned to the astronomical horizon instead of the actual midsummer sunrise. Although this makes Stonehenge Memorial difficult to use as an astronomical calendar, it's still absolutely beautiful to witness a sunset and sunrise through its stone pillars.

Maryhill Stonehenge Monument itself was commissioned by millionaire Pacific Northwest Businessman Sam Hill as a World War I memorial to honor the local soldiers who died during the war, and was dedicated on July 4, 1918. It is a full-scale, concrete replica of England's ancient Stonehenge, and was built near Maryhill, Washington just off of Highway 14. Construction ran from 1918-1929. In 2021, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and 100+ years after it was commissioned, it still remains one of the Columbia River Gorge's most iconic features.

I've spent a lifetime visiting the Columbia River Gorge. I first visited this place over 40 years ago, when my Dad would bring me here as a young child to witness sunrise on the summer solstice. Over 4 decades later, I'm still visiting this place and I bring my son up here just like my father did with me. Summer solstice sunrises are beautiful, but it's viewing a vibrant sunset through the pillars of Maryhill Stonehenge that always takes my breath away. Witnessing the beauty of nature through the pillars of this man-made structure is truly unique, and over 40 years since I first saw this scene with my Dad growing up, I still make my way up here to revel in the wonders nature and the Columbia River Gorge have to offer.

Technical Note - Preserving Museum Grade Details with an APS-C Sensor

Captured using a manually bracketed exposure sequence and created via a true 32-bit floating-point RAW workflow in ProPhoto RGB color space, this work reflects the dedication to data integrity championed by the "Mead Method." Developed over 15 years of professional fine art experience, this approach maintains an uncompressed, continuous color spectrum preserving the full linear light data of the original scene with virtually infinite tonal precision, capturing genuine structural detail entirely from the original field conditions. This advanced approach successfully overcomes the higher noise floor inherent in APS-C sensors, ensuring that fine details and subtle color gradations are preserved with museum-grade clarity.

Note on Provenance - Sunset Through the Pillars of Maryhill Stonehenge

Converted to 16-bit Adobe RGB for the master print file and sRGB for the web, this work was captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of professional fine art experience. This photograph stands as a true, authentic moment in time executed completely without the use of digital composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. A single, moment completely preserved.
