Bioluminescence, Fog and the Wreck of the Peter Iredale on the Oregon Coast, Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon

Clouds fill the sky at night while a marine layer of fog begins to roll in towards the Wreck of the Peter Iredale as the last bioluminescence of the season illuminates the waters of the Pacific Ocean as it rolls ashore. I took this photo a little over 2 months after I coded out for 2 minutes from a widowmaker heart attack, after hearing news my career would be done. I was determined to not let that happen, and here I am today.

Emptiness on the Oregon Coast: A Story of Recovery, Determination and Resilience

I took this photo a little over 2 months after I coded out for 2 minutes from a widowmaker heart attack. My ejection fractions were 29%, and my (now former) cardiologist had told me I ;needed an ICD. If I got one, I ;could live a good life in a chair for the rest of my life, but my photography days would be behind me. He pulled out the ICD unit and prepared to explain how the surgery would go, Insurance would cover it. I stopped him right there. I told him no thanks, that's not the life I wanted. I'd just grab my camera bag and keep on going. He replied "but James, you're so young!" I told him "I'd rather live my life and keep doing what I love for however long the good lord allows me, than to live the next 40-50 years sitting in a chair." With that, I walked out of his office.

After proving to myself on a treadmill I could do it, I grabbed my gear and headed out. I was hitting MET 15.5 on a treadmill in cardiac rehab hooked up to a 3 led heart monitoring device, so I knew I would be fine. So I grabbed my tripod and 40 lbs camera bag and headed out, taking this photo a short while later. 6 months later, after finding a new cardiologist, my ejection fractions would be up to 40-45%. The next year, they were a solid 45% closing in on 50%. The rest is history. It all started with this photo and the other two in this series. I was determined to live my life, and nothing my first cardiologist said was ever going to stop me.

The last thing I ever told him was this: someday, you'll know you were wrong. You can use my story to inspire others who have suffered a heart attack and feel as if they've lost hope. Well, let this story be that inspiration, and let this beautiful scene of bioluminescence at the Wreck of the Peter Iredale and a marine layer of fog over the Pacific Ocean be that inspiration. The scene seems empty at first, but emptiness is whatever you make it, and at the moment I saw this, the emptiness of the Peter Iredale on a lonely beach against a layer of fog was the most beautiful thing I could have seen.

What is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is caused by dinoflagellates, microscopic marine organisms (which are mostly marine plankton) that emit light when physically disturbed by wave action, producing the stunning blue glow visible here. Your eyes won't physically see the deep blue glow of bioluminescence in photographs unless it's near total darkness, you've given your eyes time to adjust, and it's an exceptionally intense display. This is because our rods are how we see at night, and they don't perceive color well (essentially leaving us color blind in the dark). Bioluminescence often appears as white caps on and in the waves to the naked eye, but it's still very noticeable and amazing to see. The longer you let your eyes adjust, and the more experience you have with spotting bioluminescence, the more soft hints of hues and color you will be able to recognize. Bioluminescence often occurs following plankton blooms.

As mentioned, our eyes cannot see color well in the darkness due to the biological constraints of our eyes. Our cones are activated by color, and as such they cannot see in the dark. Our rods see in the dark but cannot see color. Camera sensors do not have this problem, they are able to see the color that is truly there as long as you exposure the image for long enough. As a result, cameras are able to capture the vivid displays of bioluminescence and color our eyes cannot see, as they are not limited by the same biological constraints as our eyes in the dark. Interestingly enough our eyes see better than cameras in the daytime, with the human eye possessing approximately 20-21 stops of dynamic range compared to 14.5-15 stops for most camera sensors, with only the best professional sensors reaching 16 stops. However, camera sensors can 'see in the dark' by collecting accumulated light over long exposures when our eyes cannot.

Technical Specifications

  • Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
  • Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Settings: 24mm | f/2.8 | 30 Seconds | ISO 6400
  • Process: Single Exposure | Low Level Lighting (LLL) in Foreground | In-Camera Long Exposure (The Mead Method) | Bespoke Multi-Layer Noise Management (Manual Masking to preserve fine detail and raw data integrity)

Technical Note

Achieving a balance between the neon-blue of the bioluminescent waves and the deep rusted tones of the Peter Iredale required precise LLL (Low Level Lighting) execution. By utilizing a single-exposure workflow, I’ve ensured the temporal relationship between the moving tide and the Wreck of the Peter Iredale remains 100% authentic to the moment.

Historical Note - Fort Stevens State Park Access at Night

This photograph was captured in 2021, prior to the current 10:00 PM parking closures at Fort Stevens State Park. It serves as a rare document of the Clatsop Spit at night, a perspective that is increasingly restricted due to modern park management and conservation regulations.

Note on Provenance

This image is a certified Single Exposure. Captured using the "Mead Method" developed over 15 years of nightscape experience. No trackers, no sky-swaps, and no generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
