Emerald Mystery - Rock Creek Winter Panoramic, Upper Columbia River Gorge, Washington

Columbia River Gorge, Washington

Winter at Rock Creek in the Mountainous Upper Columbia River Gorge near the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington

Rock Creek flows through the dense evergreen forests of the mountainous Upper Columbia River Gorge during the winter months, creating a soft, ethereal flow as it passes the moss laden basalt, dense trees, dense foliage reminiscent of a Pacific Northwest Old-Growth Forest. It's a beautiful, lush contrast to the historic burn scars found further west in the Yacolt Burn State Forest

Old Growth of Yesteryear: Rock Creek near the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in the winter, Skamania County, Washington

Scenes like this always seem to soothe my soul. Witnessing Rock Creek during high flow in the winter make its way through the rugged, dense forest of the Upper Columbia River Gorge near the border of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is something I'll never forget. It's a scene which feels like it’s straight out of centuries past, almost as if you've stepped into an ancient old-growth forest from yesteryear. Witnessing those vibrant emerald hues of the forest mix with the smooth flowing water was a sight that made time stand still.

Getting here requires a bit of a bushwhack, which isn't surprising considering how dense the forest can be up here. It's a mix of unnamed forest service roads, animal use trails and overgrown trails up here, but the payoff is stunning scenes like this that are increasingly harder to find nowadays. However, the effort to get up here is not without a cost, as bushwhacking in sacred halls such as these hallowed ones often come with a Lyme tax. Looking back it's no surprise I ended up with Lyme disease and the unholy trinity of tick-borne illnesses. That's honestly the price you pay when you choose to make landscape photography your full time professional career, as the places we're required to go are often "the office" for this kind of thing. Still, it's a risk you can mitigate with the proper preparation and clothing, and places like this cleanse the soul, leaving you refreshed as you take in the ethereal wonders of nature.

The "Thin Place" of the Upper Columbia River Gorge

The mountainous reaches of the Upper Columbia River Gorge found here is a magnificent contrast to the scars left by the Yacolt Burn of 1902 (now part of the Yacolt Burn State Forest) further to the west. These sacred halls of trees, water and moss are a throwback to hundreds of years ago, when old growth and nature reigned supreme. The entire area feels like a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, and for a brief moment it seems as if you're hiking in the dense, old-growth forests of Heaven. It's such a serene, peaceful feeling up here. It's the kind of place where all your worries melt away as you take in the wonders of nature as they were truly meant to be seen. I've always loved forest scenes, but the emerald mystery of the forests in the upper reaches of the gorge always takes my breath away. It feels like a simpler time of here, and for a brief moment, as I straddled the rocks in the creek to take this panoramic photo, everything in the world was right. That's the power of nature: its ability to heal whatever ails our soul. Places like this always renew my sense of wonder, and it's why I'll always find my way back to wondrous places like this.

Technical Specifications

  • Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
  • Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Settings: 28mm | f/11 | 90 Seconds | ISO 100
  • Technique: 3-Image Panoramic (native 2x1 aspect ratio) of Single Exposures | Bulb ModeSuccessive Back-to-Back Exposures using a Nodal Rail to Prevent Parallax Error
  • Exposure: All Panoramic Images at Same Settings | Mental Exposure Extrapolation | 10-Stop Neutral Density Filter (ND Filter)
  • Process: The Mead Method (In-Camera Long Exposure) | Bespoke Multi-Layer Noise Management (Manual Masking to preserve textures in the basalt, forest, and moss while maintaining raw data integrity in the water)

Technical Note: The Physics of the Long Exposure

Modern camera sensors and internal light meters are often ill equipped to accurately see through a dense 10-stop ND filter. For this composition, the 90 second exposure for each of the 3 panoramic images was determined via Manual Light Interpretation and reciprocity law extrapolation (we used to call this manual metering, but some modern definitions disagree and refer to that as something far less complex).

By bypassing automated tools and internal meters, which are notoriously inaccurate in long exposure and high contrast environments, the shutter was manually timed to the specific atmospheric conditions of the forest. This calculated approach ensures the highest possible raw data density and tonal range before the processing phase begins.

Note on Provenance

Captured using the single exposure panoramic workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
