Placid Waters - Rock Creek in the Winter, Columbia River Gorge, Washington
Rock Creek, Columbia River Gorge, Skamania County, Washington
Rock Creek in the Mountainous Reaches of the Upper Columbia River Gorge near the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington
Rock Creek flows through the dense evergreen forests of the mountainous reaches of the Upper Columbia River Gorge during the winter months, creating a soft and ethereal flow as it passes the dense trees, foliage and moss laden basalt reminiscent of a Pacific Northwest Old-Growth Forest. It's a beautiful, lush contrast to the historic burn scars found further west in the Yacolt Burn State Forest.
This image is available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition fine art print, part of James Mead's fine art documentation of the Columbia River Gorge.

Rock Creek in the Winter near the Edge of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Skamania County, Washington
Located along the remote reaches of the Upper Columbia River Gorge, this area of Rock Creek springs to life in the winter as heavy water flow transforms its waters into a placid scene as it flows down the steep gradients among the dense forest here. It's an ethereal scene which feels like ancient old-growth forest, an experience that's becoming increasingly harder to find these days.
Accessing this spot required a rigorous bushwhack through the rugged terrain near the border of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest after navigating unmarked forest roads, and looking back it's no wonder I ended up with Lyme Disease and the unholy trinity of tick-borne illnesses. I guess the Lyme tax is the price you pay when your soul and eyes get the better of you when looking for a scene based on a feeling. The entire forest is a throwback to centuries past. It's a serene scene that's easy to get lost in, and it's the kind of beauty that restores and refreshes the soul.
While the Yacolt Burn of 1902 (now part of the Yacolt Burn State Forest) left a lasting mark on the landscape further to the west, this pocket high in the upper reaches of the gorge feels like a sanctuary of water and moss where time slowed down. The deep greens of the trees and moss in this lush, dense forest are a beautiful complement to the rhythmic sounds of the waters of Rock Creek as it flows over the basalt heavy landscape in this area. The entire area is a thin place that blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, transporting you from the modern world back to the simpler time where beauty reigned supreme in centuries past. It's easy to get lost in the beauty of a place like this, and when you find it your soul always comes away with a renewed sense of wonder.
Technical Specifications
- Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
- Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
- Settings: 24mm | f/11 | 86 Seconds | ISO 100
- Process: Single Exposure | Bulb Mode | Manual Exposure Extrapolation | 10-Stop Neutral Density Filter (ND Filter) | The Mead Method | Bespoke Multi-Layer Noise Management (Manual Masking to preserve textures in the basalt, forest and moss while maintaining raw data integrity in the water)
Technical Note: The Physics of the Long Exposure
Modern camera sensors and internal light meters are often ill equipped to accurately see through a dense 10-stop ND filter. For this composition, the 86 second exposure was determined via Manual Light Interpretation and reciprocity law extrapolation (we used to call this manual metering, but some modern definitions disagree and refer to that as something far less complex).
By bypassing automated tools and internal meters, which are notoriously inaccurate in long exposure and high contrast environments, the shutter was manually timed to the specific atmospheric conditions of the forest. This calculated approach ensures the highest possible raw data density and tonal range before the processing phase begins.
Note on Provenance - Rock Creek in the Winter High Up in the Columbia River Gorge
Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
