Charmed Paradise - Milky Way and Airglow over Crater Lake, Pumice Point, Cloudcap and Mount Scott
Pumice Point, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
The Milky Way Core and Airglow over Pumice Point, Crater Lake, Cloudcap, Mount Scott, Dutton Cliff, and Garfield Peak in Crater Lake National Park
The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above Pumice Point and Crater Lake as airglow illuminates the skies above. The airglow and Milky Way core faintly reflect off the waters of Crater Lake stretching 5.4 miles across to Applegate Peak on the South Rim, as Mount Scott rises 5.9 miles away above Cloudcap on the East Rim. From Cloudcap 4.1 miles across the lake, the view stretches out towards Kerr Notch, Dutton Cliff, Sun Notch, Applegate Peak and Garfield Peak. The Milky Way core rises into the skies just west of Garfield Peak, directly above Rim Village on the South Rim as the Sagittarius Star Cloud, Dark Horse Nebula and the Great Rift rise high into the sky above. At Pumice Point, shrubs line the top of the rim as trees cover the slopes reaching down towards the water below. It's a charmed paradise of night wonders against the beauty of Oregon's only national park, displayed in a manner only a Bortle Class 1 sky can provide.
Fine art landscape stitched vertical panoramic photograph of the Milky Way and airglow over Crater Lake from Pumice Point in Crater Lake National Park. This image captures the stunning cosmic glow of the Milky Way reflecting in the waters of Crater Lake above Oregon's only National Park. Now available as a luxury museum-grade limited edition print by James Mead.
Peering into the Past: The Charmed Paradise of the Milky Way at Pumice Point and Crater Lake
Crater Lake has always had some of the darkest skies I've ever seen. Places like Crater Lake allow us to enjoy the wonders of the night sky, something that's increasingly harder to find. There's always something special about heading out into the dark of night and staring up at the stars above. We're essentially peering into the past, as the light we're looking at happened many years in the past and is just now reaching us. The Milky Way core itself is 26,000 light years away, and the light we see today is something that happened 26,000 years ago. It's incredibly humbling and inspirational. It's amazing to see this ancient light, twinkling far above these wonders of nature. Life slows down and everything makes sense, as whatever is troubling your mind seems to melt away. Crater Lake always feels like a Charmed Paradise. It's a beautiful, magical place that heals the soul and leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Nature always has a way of healing our soul, and the ancient light we can experience in places like this take that to a whole new level. There's something about staring out at the caldera of Crater Lake as the Milky Way twinkles above that never gets old. It's a sight I've enjoyed for a long time, and it's one I'll always continue to enjoy. Life just makes sense in places like this.
