A Warm Glow at Nautical Sunset over the Death Valley Mud Cracks in Death Valley National Park
The last colors of sunset hang on along the horizon above the Death Valley Mud Cracks as nautical twilight begins to draw to a close and nautical sunset begins to set in. The dried mud cracks create plates of geometric patterns, several inches thick curling upwards towards the sky from lack of moisture. Death Valley is the most arid place in North America, seeing 1.5 to 2 inches of rain per year, with an evaporation rate of 150 inches per year (75x the precipitation rate). This creates an otherworldly, alien environment that at times seems straight out of Mars. These uneven, broken mud cracks are ephemeral formations which take shape along localized flood plains and alluvial mud deposits below the mountain washes. This creates mud made up of a fascinating mix of gravel, sand and clay. As the dry desert landscape of the Mojave Desert contracts and shrinks after seasonal runoff, it leaves these wondrous, otherworldly enchanting formations which resemble a jigsaw puzzle made of earth.
Fractured Twilight shows the fast change in color that can occur along the horizon as nautical sunset approaches. It was taken a mere 10 minutes later at the Death Valley Mud Cracks, but the warm glow is gone and the horizon is dominated by a magenta glow with many stars showing in the sky above. Here, in my photo Broken, a warm yellow glow still dominates the southwestern horizon, while the southeastern horizon is shifting to a reddish-orange with hints of magenta with 4 faint stars making an early appearance.

What Creates the Dried Mud Cracks in Death Valley?
Dried mud in Death Valley National Park creates deep mud cracks shaped like geometric patterns in the dry, arid landscape of the Mojave Desert. They are not found in one, permanent location. Rain and flash floods cause them to disappear, and as the landscape dries out the mud contracts causing cracks in the mud and the mud cracks to re-appear. The mud cracks form in spots with mud deposits along the alluvial mud deposits, dried lakebeds and playas that line the valley floor. They do not appear in places which are the salt flats along the valley floor. This is where the famous honeycomb like hexagon shaped salt rings appear, as seen in Under the Sea and across my Badwater Basin Photography in my Death Valley gallery. The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes have places where polygon-cracked clay from an ancient lakebed forms the floor, and it can occasionally be seen in certain parts of the lower dunes around the outer edges (especially after flooding). The Furnace Creek area is another location where they tend to form, and they have formed near the Stovepipe Wells area and in various washes around Death Valley. Any place flooding has left mud deposits will begin to form mud cracks once the mud dries out due to the intense heat of Death Valley, so it's important to pay attention to the weather patterns here to track where the mud cracks may occur during any given drying cycle.
The uneven, broken mud cracks are ephemeral formations which take shape along localized flood plains and alluvial mud deposits below the mountain washes. This creates mud made up of a fascinating mix of gravel, sand and clay with an uneven drying rate causes them to contract at differing rates, causing the uneven, jagged jigsaw puzzle patterns. In contrast, places like Racetrack Playa have a fairly uniform mud composition making up the dried lakebed of the playa. This creates an even drying rate, which crack in a pattern of 3 cracks intersecting, which forms uniform hexagon crack patterns across the landscape due to the more even sediment and uniform drying rate.
What is the difference between Nautical Sunset and Nautical Twilight?
The difference between nautical sunset and nautical twilight is simple. Nautical twilight is the period of time where the sun is between -6 degrees and -12 degrees below the horizon. Nautical sunset (also known as nautical dusk) marks the end of nautical twilight. The sun has reached -12 degrees below the horizon, marking the point after sunset where the colors fade out enough it becomes hard to see the horizon, so sailors must navigate with the stars and other celestial bodies. Many people interchangeably use the terms nautical sunset and nautical twilight to refer to any time when the sun is between -6 degrees and -12 degrees below the horizon, though this is technically incorrect as nautical twilight is a period of time and nautical sunset (nautical dusk) is an exact moment. Another common term you'll hear for nautical twilight is blue hour (though technically, the blue hour starts during the back half of civil twilight). By any definition, nautical twilight is the second phase of twilight (civil twilight is the first phase, nautical twilight is the second phase, and astronomical twilight is the third phase. True night follows astronomical dusk, which is the moment the sun reaches -18.0 degrees below the horizon).

Historical and Provenance Note
The Death Valley Mud Cracks are highly ephemeral, changing size, shape and location as the landscape endures the never ending cycle of heating, drying, and flooding as the cycle repeats itself over time. As such, each photo of these formations is a unique moment in time that rarely exists in quite the same manner once the cycle repeats.
Since this image was captured, the cycle has repeated multiple times. Flooding has washed away these specific mud cracks as silt washes down from above and starts the process anew. As such, this photo stands as a moment long since gone: a moment frozen in time through the wonders of photography.
This photo uses focus stacking to ensure a sharp depth of field throughout the frame. It is natural to the scene as it was taken. Exposures were taken back to back, one immediately after the other. As always, no generative AI is ever used in my work.
