Moon Bridge, Upper Pond and Peak Fall Color Japanese Maples in the Autumn at the Strolling Pond Garden in the Portland Japanese Garden

Fall brings beautiful orange and red peak fall colors to the Upright Japanese Maple trees (Acer palmatum) surrounding Moon Bridge and Upper Pond in the Strolling Pond Garden at the Portland Japanese Garden. Moon Bridge gracefully arches over the pond. Towering native Western Redcedar trees (Thuja plicata) and Douglas fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii) rise overhead as orange, yellow and red peak fall colors of Upright Japanese Maples peek through beneath the forest canopy below.

Red and orange peak fall color on the Japanese Maples peek through in the understory all around the pond, as 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki') peek through the Western Redcedar and Douglas Fir trees towering over the garden next to Moon Bridge. Giboshi Bronze Lotus Finials show on Moon Bridge between the foliage on both sides of the bridge. 'Osakazuki' Upright Japanese Maples grow on the western shore of the pond, arching over Moon Bridge and a Weeping Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum) which grows next to the pond below.

Two crane sculptures sit just near wet river rocks along the shore, which according to Japanese garden tradition symbolize longevity and good fortune as moss covered pyramid shaped stone rises up from the water nearby. Near the Kashintei Tea House and the deeper woodland areas behind Moon Bridge, 'Emperor I' Upright Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum 'Wolff') show their dark-maroon fall foliage that creates a beautiful palette of layered fall color when combined with the yellow, gold, and fiery orange and red of the other Japanese Maples surrounding Upper Pond.

Rain drops are visible in the water of the pond, a reminder of the Pacific Northwest weather which helps make this world-class Japanese Garden unique. Everything comes together at Upper Pond in the Strolling Pond Garden to create a beautiful autumn scene with one of Portland's best displays of fall color. It's a beautiful mix of nature, artistic design and architecture which helps make the Portland Japanese Garden the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan.
