The Yosemite High Country in the High Sierras is famed for its beauty. Located in the upper reaches and higher elevations of the 747,956 acres that make up Yosemite National Park, the high country sees fewer visitors than the more famous Yosemite Valley but it’s equally as stunning. Sunset and sunrise here bring breathtaking light to views of Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Fairview Dome, Lambert Dome, Tenya Lake, Mount Dana and the Tuolumne River. It’s a calmer, slower pace of life up here, which is to be expected in a place where the elevation often ranges from 7,000 feet to over 13,000 feet.
The Yosemite High Country was inspiration for John Muir. He explored and advocated for the high country a great deal in his writing. The love and advocacy he had for this place and the High Sierra is one of the main reasons the 211 mile long John Muir Trail (the JMT) was named in his honor. 70 miles of this trail run through Yosemite.
John Muir’s writing about Yosemite and the high country would have a profound influence on a young Ansel Adams, who would spend the course of his life photographing Yosemite. Adams famous 1927 photograph “Monolith, The Face of Half Dome” was taken in the Yosemite High Country. This photo, Adams other Yosemite work and the writings of John Muir would have a deep influence on me from a young age.
My father would often talk to me about Adams and Muir with a strong sense of admiration and wonder, and his love for Yosemite combined with their love for Yosemite would have a profound influence on me from a young age. I always held the high country in high regard, and I still remember the excitement I felt as I made my way up Tioga Road towards Tioga Pass for the first time. From that point onward, I would spend a lifetime coming up to the high country to witness its beauty and grandeur.
The high country has a different feel than Yosemite Valley; it’s more spread out, wide open and less crowded. It’s dominated by views of high peaks, granite domes, alpine meadows and high elevation alpine lakes. The roads and trails up here are more remote, resulting in a quieter, more intimate experience. Summer sunrises and sunsets up here are magical, and the autumn light over places like Olmsted Point offer some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness.
Late autumn, when the temperatures drop and the water begins to freeze over in places like Tuolumne Meadows offer some of the most serene, peaceful moments I’ve ever experienced. I’m often alone up here in the late autumn, with no one else around for miles and miles. It’s cold, quiet and remote, a moment where everything slows down and time feels like it stands still. I've spent a lifetime capturing these serene moments in this beautiful place. Yosemite has long been my muse, and the high country has always been a place where I draw a deep sense of creative inspiration. It’s a place filled with a sense of wonder and awe, and I hope everyone viewing my Yosemite High Country Fine Art Photography gallery feels the same sense of inspiration and amazement that I’ve always felt here.
