Sunset casts a golden glow onto the Palisades of the Desert and the South Rim as soft pastel colors begin to show in the skies far above the Grand Canyon. Unkar Creek makes its way towards the Colorado River in the inner canyon far below Walhalla Overlook, flowing into the Colorado River near where the river bends at the Unkar Delta. This creates a spot with sandy river banks, as brilliant, vermilion color (red-orange) rocks rise up surrounding it. The Unkar Delta is one of the most underrated features in the inner canyon, with the deep, rich red colors here a beautiful contrast against the warmer yellows, oranges and reds on the Palisades of the Desert and south rim rising high above.
Desert View stands at the right side of the v-shaped notch 8.91 miles across the canyon bathed in the golden glow of sunset, marking the spot where the South Rim of the Grand Canyon transitions towards the East Rim. All 3 major rims of the Grand Canyon (North Rim, East Rim, and South Rim) are visible at once in this photo.
