The Middle Tiers of Shepperd's Dell Falls and Youngs Creek in the Summer in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon
The middle tiers of Shepperd’s Dell Falls gracefully make its way through the lush green forest and over the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge in the summer, falling through the forest as Youngs Creek elegantly makes its way towards the Columbia River below. Shepperd’s Dell Falls is about 220 feet with 8 tiers in total, though it's hard to see most of the waterfall at once. This section on the middle 32 foot tiers of the waterfall has always been my favorite. Just past here, the waterfall makes a 45 foot drop in an hourglass shape down into a small canyon below, with two additional 20 foot drops below that. Above the middle tiers of Shepperd’s Dell Falls, the waterfall is mostly hidden except from certain views in the late autumn and winter when the trees have lost most of their leaves. When it is visible, it falls into a narrow gorge as the creek makes a sharp 90 degree turn and down into the middle tiers.
In 1915, George Shepperd donated the land to the City of Portland and Shepperd's Dell is named in his honor. It's always been one of my favorite places in the Columbia River Gorge. The forest is a lush mix of ferns, moss covered logs, moss covered basalt and other plants. Poison Oak is common here, it looks like a beautiful green in the spring and summer but it's one of the many reasons bushwhacking here is highly discouraged. Still, that's perfectly fine. There's really no need to go much past this spot, is among the most serene places in the gorge. It feels like you've been transported to a magical forest of yesteryear, and the tranquil beauty here can rival that of Big Springs Creek Falls in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Like Big Springs Creek Falls, Shepperd's Dell is hidden and underrated. I've been visiting Sheppard’s Dell Falls for as long as I can remember, and over 4 decades later it's still a place I always seek out for a moment of peace and tranquility.
