The base of a giant Coastal Redwood tree leans as it rises up high into the sky in the old-growth Redwood Forests of Bolling Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Bolling Grove was the first grove of Giant Redwoods to be protected along the Northern California Coast.

Bolling Grove is a small grove at only 60 acres, but with no trails and lots of old, giant Coastal Redwoods it's a serene experience when you're lucky enough to have it all to yourself. The weather was colder by mid-November when this was taken, and the crowds were gone. Most of the businesses in the Redwoods had closed down for the season by then, making this feeling like a throwback to a time when giant Coastal Redwood trees reigned supreme.

Although the forest floor here is now mostly covered in redwood needles instead of ferns and other foliage, a walk among these giants still brings about a sense of peace and wonder as you look up out at the mammoth sized tree trunks and up through the forest canopy. It's one of those places where the forest floor can lay in darkness at noon, as the thick canopy often filters out most of the sunlight. It feels like a walk through the forest as intended: just you, the giant redwoods and the dark forest canopy. It's easy to see why Bolling Grove was the first grove protected on the Northern California Coast over 100 years ago (it was originally purchased and protected in 1921), and over 100 years later a walk among these giants still feels much like it did back then.

Bolling Grove Facts and Historical Notes: The First Grove Protected on the Northern California Coast

Bolling Grove was the first grove of Giant Coastal Redwoods to be purchased by the Save the Redwoods League, and it was the first grove to be protected on the Northern California Coast. It was purchased in 1921 from the Pacific Lumber Company using $12,000 in donations, becoming one of the first groves in what would become Humboldt Redwoods State Park (which now spans 53,000 acres). It's a smaller grove of Redwoods, but it contains some truly giant Redwood trees growing in an alluvial flat. It was named in honor of Colonel Raynal C. Bolling on August 6, 1921. Bolling was originally a corporate lawyer by trade, but would become one of the first high ranking American officers to lose their life in World War I. Boiling Grove was purchased using the donations and named in his honor.
